MELBOURNE - Mar 7/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A tropical low lies to the south of the southeast tip of Papua New Guinea, and is expected to move to the southwest over the next few days whilst slowly developing. Another low north of the Gulf of Carpentaria is expected to move towards the east-southeast while developing during the next few days. Forecasts over the weekend for the central coast and tropical northern Queensland will be highly dependent on the development and movement of these lows. A high over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge over southern Queensland waters. The ridge will be reinforced by a new high moving east into southeastern Australia today. A series of weak upper troughs will move across the south of the state over the next few days, maintaining the weak instability near the inland surface trough over western Queensland. Forecast for the rest of FridayIsolated showers for eastern districts, increasing along the tropical coast during the afternoon and evening. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the far north of the state. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible over the southern interior. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere.Fire Danger - Very High over the Central Highlands.Saturday 8 MarchForecasts for northeastern Queensland are highly dependent on the development of the two tropical lows in the tropics. The system in the Coral Sea will most likely continue moving south to southwestwards and may approach the northeast coast of Queensland. There is also a high probability of the system developing into a tropical cyclone. The low north of the Gulf of Carpentaria is likely to move east-southeast and slowly develop. Showers and rain areas are expected to increase along the tropical and central coasts late in the day, with isolated showers along the remaining east coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected in the far north and over the southern interior.Sunday 9 MarchUncertainty persists with the movement and development of the tropical lows. The Coral Sea low is likely to continue moving southwards close to the southern tropical Queensland coast and may develop into a tropical cyclone. The Gulf of Carpentaria is expected to move towards the Peninsula coast and may develop further into a tropical cyclone also. Rain areas and thunderstorms with some heavy falls are likely about the east tropical and central coasts with gales also likely, and also about the northern Peninsula. Isolated to scattered showers will occur further south along east coast in an onshore wind flow. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible about the southwest.Monday 10 MarchForecasts remain highly dependent on the development and movement of the tropical systems off the northeast coast and in the northern Gulf of Carpentaria. Rain areas and thunderstorms with some heavy falls are likely about the northern and eastern tropical areas. Isolated to scattered showers will occur further south along east coast in an onshore wind flow. Scattered showers and storms will persist elsewhere in the north of the state. Fine over the west.Tuesday until ThursdayForecasts during the outlook period remain highly dependent on the development and movement of the tropical systems off the northeast coast and in the northern Gulf of Carpentaria. Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over some tropical areas, mostly the central coast, but easing as the tropical systems are expected to drift further offshore. Isolated to scattered showers along the remaining east coast.
