Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 22/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A surface trough extends from the northwest through the central interior, into the southern interior and will drift westwards into the west of the state by late today. The trough will remain slow moving over the west of the state early next week. A firm ridge of high pressure lies along much of the east coast from a high over southeast Australia. The high will move into the Tasman Sea early next week and weaken, gradually relaxing the ridge.
Forecast for the rest of SundayIsolated showers about the east coast, tending scattered through central and southern tropical areas with possible storms in the northern tropics. Isolated to scattered showers and storms through the remaining tropics and western areas of the state, more widespread through the northern tropics. Moderate to fresh and gusty south to southeasterly winds in the west. Moderate westerly winds in the very far north. Moderate east to southeast winds elsewhere, fresh and gusty about the coast south of about Bowen and about the Great Dividing Range.Fire Danger -  Moderate to high for the southern half of the state, reaching very high in the far southwest.Monday 24 FebruaryThe high will shift further east into the Tasman Sea, extending the ridge further north through the North Tropical Coast, with showers decreasing here during the day. Isolated showers will occur about the remaining east coast in the onshore wind flow. A moist and unstable airmass will maintain scattered showers and storms through the tropics. A surface trough will persist over western Queensland, producing showers and storms over areas west of about Longreach.Tuesday 25 FebruaryThe high in the Tasman Sea will move east, with the onshore wind flow along the east Queensland coast weakening. Shower and storm activity will remain focused over the northern tropics and through the west of the state west of about Longreach. Isolated shower activity will continue about the east coast in the onshore wind flow. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere.Wednesday 26 FebruaryThe high in the Tasman Sea will shift east of New Zealand, weakening the onshore wind flow along the east Queensland. Shower and storm activity will remain focused over the northern tropics and through the west of the state west of about Longreach and into the southern inland west of about Charleville. Isolated shower activity will continue about the east coast in the onshore wind flow. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere.Thursday until SaturdayThe next high will push through the Bight and into the Tasman Sea by Saturday, with the ridge beginning to strengthen again as a result. Isolated to scattered showers will occur about the east coast in the onshore wind flow. Showers and storms will persist about the far northern tropics and northwest of the state. An upper level trough will remain slow moving near western Queensland, with scattered showers and storms expected through the west and southern inland.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Sunday.Product IDQ10700
