Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 21/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A surface trough extends from the northwest through the central and southeastern interior of the state and is expected to gradually move west during the weekend. A firm ridge of high pressure will build along the east coast from a high over southeastern Australia during the weekend. The high will then weaken from Monday, gradually relaxing the ridge.
Forecast for the rest of SaturdayCloudy and cool with areas of rain over far southwestern Queensland. Isolated showers about the southeast of the state, scattered at first about Fraser Island and the Wide Bay coast. Mostly fine over the Central Coast and southeastern tropics with just the chance of isolated showers. Isolated to scattered showers and storms about much of the remainder of the state, more widespread through the northern tropics with possible locally heavy falls with storms. Moderate to fresh and gusty south to southeasterly winds in the west. Moderate westerly winds in the very far north. Moderate east to southeast winds elsewhere, fresh and gusty about the coast south of about St Lawrence and about the Great Dividing Range.Fire Danger -  Very high in the Channel Country.Sunday 23 FebruaryThe ridge will continue to build along the east Queensland coast as a high shifts east into the Tasman Sea. Isolated showers will occur about the east coast in the onshore flow, more frequent with possible storms about the east tropical coast. The surface trough will shift west to lie near Boulia to Thargomindah. Showers and storms will therefore contract west out of the southern Central Highlands and Maranoa, while increasing through the southwest and central west of the state. A moist and unstable airmass will result in scattered showers and storms through the northern tropics.Monday 24 FebruaryThe high will shift further east into the Tasman Sea, extending the ridge further north through the North Tropical Coast, with showers decreasing here during the day. Isolated showers will occur about the remaining east coast in the onshore wind flow. A moist and unstable airmass will maintain scattered showers and storms through the tropics. A surface trough will persist over western Queensland, producing showers and storms over areas west of about Longreach.Tuesday 25 FebruaryThe high in the Tasman Sea will move east, with the onshore wind flow along the east Queensland coast weakening. Shower and storm activity will remain focused over the northern tropics and through the west of the state west of about Longreach. Isolated shower activity will continue about the east coast in the onshore wind flow. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere.Wednesday until FridayThe high in the Tasman Sea will weaken during the outlook period, relaxing the ridge further along the east Queensland coast. Isolated to scattered showers will occur about the east coast in the onshore wind flow. Showers and storms will persist about the far northern tropics and northwest of the state. A new upper trough will most likely enter the southwest of the state on Thursday and shift slowly into the southern interior on Friday, generating scattered showers and storms with its passage.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Saturday.Product IDQ10700
