Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 21/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A surface trough extends across the central interior of the state and is expected to move into the west of the state over the weekend whilst weakening. Very moist and unstable conditions will persist to the east of the surface trough, particularly over the interior. A coastal trough and an associated southerly wind change is moving north through southern Queensland waters and will progress northwards along the east coast over the weekend. A firm ridge of high pressure will then gradually extend along the east Queensland coast during the weekend in the wake of the trough.
Forecast for the rest of FridayAn area of patchy rain lies from the southern Central West into the northeastern Channel Country and far western Warrego. Mostly fine over the Central Highlands, Capricornia and the Wide Bay with just the chance of isolated showers or storms. Showers becoming more frequent about the east tropical coast with possible isolated thunderstorms. Isolated to scattered showers and storms elsewhere east of about Doomadgee to Roma to Goondiwindi. Moderate to fresh and gusty south to southeasterly winds in the west. Moderate westerly winds in the very far north. Light to moderate east to northeasterly winds elsewhere, tending fresh to strong south to southeasterly over far southern waters.Saturday 22 FebruaryCloud and cool with patchy rain over far southwestern Queensland. Moderate east to southeast winds elsewhere, fresh and gusty about the coast south of about St Lawrence and about the Great Dividing Range.Fire Danger - Very high in the Channel Country.Sunday 23 FebruaryThe ridge will continue to build along the east Queensland coast as a high shifts east into the Tasman Sea. Fine about the Darling Downs and Granite Belt and much of the southeast. Isolated showers about the east coast in the onshore flow, more frequent with possible storms about the northeast tropical coast. A moist and unstable airmass will result in scattered showers and storms through the tropics. The surface trough over the interior of the state will shift further west to lie near Boulia to Quilpie, with isolated to scattered showers and storms occurring over the interior to its northeast. Cloud will decrease through the far southwest of the state though some patchy rain and possible isolated thunderstorms remain likely.Monday 24 FebruaryThe high will shift further east into the Tasman Sea, extending the ridge further north through the North Tropical Coast, with showers decreasing here during the day. Isolated showers will occur about the remaining east coast in the onshore wind flow. A moist and unstable airmass will maintain scattered showers and storms through the tropics. A surface trough will persist over western Queensland, producing showers and storms over areas west of about Longreach.Tuesday 25 FebruaryThe high in the Tasman Sea will weaken with the onshore flow along the east coast weakening. Fine and mostly sunny for the Central Highlands and much of the southeast of the state with only isolated showers about the exposed coast. Isolated showers about the North Tropical Coast district. The surface trough is likely to persist in the west of the state with isolated showers and thunderstorms west of Longreach.Wednesday until FridayThe high in the Tasman Sea will weaken during the outlook period, gradually relaxing the ridge along the east Queensland coast. Isolated to scattered showers will occur about the east coast in the onshore wind flow. Showers and storms will persist about the far northern tropics and northwest of the state. A new upper trough will most likely enter the southwest of the state on Thursday and shift slowly into the southern interior on Friday generating scattered showers and storms over the west of the state and southern interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Saturday.Product IDQ10700
