Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 20/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A surface trough extends across the central interior of the state and is expected to move further westwards during today and then weaken during the weekend. Very moist and unstable conditions extend over areas near and to the east of the surface trough, particularly the interior. A coastal trough and an associated southerly wind change will move north through southern Queensland waters during today. A firm ridge of high pressure will then gradually extend along the east Queensland coast during the weekend in the wake of the trough. The west to northwest monsoonal flow over far northern Queensland is gradually easing.
Forecast for the rest of FridayAn area showers and rain will extend southwest from the Central West into the northeastern Channel Country and western Warrego during the day. A cool to cold day is expected under areas of cloud in the southwest. Mostly fine over central districts and the Wide Bay with just the chance of isolated showers or storms. Showers becoming more frequent about the east tropical coast with possible isolated thunderstorms. Isolated to scattered showers and storms elsewhere east of about Doomadgee to Roma to Goondiwindi. Moderate to fresh and gusty south to southeasterly winds in the west. Moderate westerly winds in the very far north. Light to moderate east to northeasterly winds elsewhere, tending fresh to strong south to southeasterly over far southern waters during the afternoon and evening.Fire Danger - High to Very High in the west, Low to moderate elsewhere.Saturday 22 FebruaryThe upper level trough will drift towards the southwestern border, contracting the area of rain and cool to cold maximum temperatures further into far southwestern Queensland. The trough over far southern coastal waters will progress further north towards central coast waters. A ridge will then build along the east Queensland coast in the wake of the trough, stabilising conditions further over the southeast with only isolated showers expected, scattered at first about Fraser Island and the Wide Bay coast. A surface trough will continue to extend from the Gulf Country into the southern interior of the state near Charleville, with isolated to scattered showers and storms to its northeast, more widespread through the tropics where locally heavy falls are possible. Showers will become more frequent about the northeast tropical coast.Sunday 23 FebruaryThe ridge will continue to build along the east Queensland coast as a high shifts east into the Tasman Sea, with isolated showers occurring on the east coast in the onshore flow, more frequent with possible storms and locally heavy falls about the northeast tropical coast. A moist and unstable airmass will result in scattered to widespread showers and storms through the tropics, with locally heavy falls likely, particularly near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and through the Peninsula. The surface trough over the interior of the state will shift further west to lie near Boulia to Quilpie, with isolated to scattered showers and storms occurring over the interior to its northeast. Cloud will decrease through the far southwest of the state though some patchy rain and possible isolated thunderstorms remain likely.Monday 24 FebruaryThe high will shift further east into the Tasman Sea, extending the ridge further north through the North Tropical Coast, with showers decreasing here during the day. Isolated showers will occur about the remaining east coast in the onshore wind flow. A moist and unstable airmass will maintain scattered showers and storms through the tropics. A surface trough will persist over western Queensland, producing showers and storms over areas near and west of about Longreach.Tuesday until ThursdayThe high in the Tasman Sea will weaken during the outlook period, gradually relaxing the ridge along the east Queensland coast. Isolated to scattered showers will occur about the east coast in the onshore wind flow. Showers and storms will persist about the far northern tropics and northwest of the state. A new trough will most likely enter the west of the state on Wednesday and shift slowly east over the interior, generating scattered showers and storms over the southern interior near and to its east. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Friday.Product IDQ10700
