Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 18/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A slow moving surface trough extends across the western interior of the state with warm, humid north to northeasterly winds to its east, and cooler conditions with fresh southerly winds to its west. Unstable conditions should persist to the east of the surface trough. Fresh to strong monsoonal flow is likely to remain in place over the far north during today and Thursday.
Forecast for the rest of WednesdayScattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and rain areas over most parts of the state, particularly through the tropics and the central interior, mostly east of a line from about Boulia to Ballera. Rain areas are likely to intensify through central parts of the state during the afternoon and evening, while gradually extending to the eastern interior. Moderate to heavy falls are expected, mostly about the Herbert and Lower Burdekin coast and adjacent inland, as well as in a wide swath extending from the Gulf Country, through the central interior, down to the southern interior. Southeastern parts should be mostly fine initially with only isolated showers, before some late patchy rain.Fire Danger -  High to Very High over the far southwest.Thursday 20 FebruaryThe southern portion of the upper trough become slow-moving over the southern inland during the day, while the northern section of the upper trough and the surface trough should move slowly westwards across the state's northern interior. A humid and unstable airmass should remain in place to the east of the surface trough, with further showers, rain areas and thunderstorms, shifting gradually to the eastern interior. Moderate to heavy falls are again possible from the Gulf Country through the centre, the eastern interior and in to the Darling Downs. A monsoonal flow is likely to remain in place over the far north, with rain areas and isolated thunderstorms through the tropics.Friday 21 FebruaryThe remnant upper trough will move gradually back towards the west during the day, extending patchy rain areas back to western parts of the state during the day. A humid and unstable airmass should remain in place over central, eastern and northern parts of the state, with further showers, thunderstorms and rain areas expected. The inland trough is likely to remain in place through the centre of the state but will move off the southern coast on Friday, followed by a firm ridge developing along the southern half of the east coast. At the same time, monsoonal flow is likely to remain in place over the far north. This should lead to thunderstorm activity shifting inland over southern Queensland. Widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the north in the monsoonal flow.Saturday 22 FebruaryThe remnant upper trough will drift towards the Northern Territory and weaken during the day, causing an easing of shower and thunderstorm activity over the centre of the state. A moist unstable airmass over the tropics and near a trough in the west should still remain in place and continue to bring scattered shower and thunderstorm activity. The weakening monsoon flow is likely to lead to scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and rain areas about the North Tropical Coast. A southeasterly change will push up the southeast coast during Saturday, initially increasing shower activity about southeastern Queensland temporarily, before helping to stabilise the weather in its wake.Sunday until TuesdayShower and thunderstorm activity will continue to be mostly situated over the west of the state, near the surface trough, with only isolated showers and thunderstorms over the remainder of the state. The monsoon flow through the tropics is also expected to weaken on Sunday and into Monday, however widespread showers, thunderstorms and rain areas are still expected over the Peninsula, Gulf Country and northeastern tropics. A strong ridge over the east of the state should produce mostly fine conditions over eastern districts south of about Ingham, with only isolated showers about the exposed coasts in the onshore flow.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Wednesday.Product IDQ10700
