Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 13/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A weak upper level low lies over the Coral Sea and will likely move west onto the southern tropical or central coast late in the weekend. A trough will extend from a low over the Northern Territory to the southwestern Queensland border on Saturday. The trough should then shift further east over the interior of Queensland during Sunday, while the low will likely track north through the Northern Territory close to the Queensland border. Hot northwesterly winds will spread through the southern interior to the southern coast during the weekend ahead of the trough.
Forecast for the rest of ThursdayIsolated showers and thunderstorms northwest of about Mount Isa to Cooktown, particularly near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and northern Cape York Peninsula. Mostly fine about the remaining east coast with just the chance of isolated showers north of about St Lawrence. Possible showers and thunderstorms developing near the New South Wales border and also through Darling Downs and Maranoa districts to the Carnarvon ranges. Moderate to fresh and gusty northwest to northeast winds through the interior. Light to moderate southeast to northeasterly winds elsewhere.Friday 14 FebruaryMostly fine about much of the east coast with just the chance of isolated showers north of about Gladstone. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms through the Peninsula and Gulf Country. Possible isolated showers and thunderstorms expected through the southern interior, mostly about the Darling Downs, Maranoa and Carnarvon ranges. Fine and mostly sunny conditions over the remaining interior. Freshening northwesterly winds will result in hot conditions through the southwest and southern interior.Moderate southeast to northeast winds elsewhere.Fire Danger -  Severe in the Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego. Very high elsewhere in the central and southern interior.Saturday 15 FebruaryA trough will most likely extend from a deep low over southern parts of the Northern Territory to the southwestern border of Queensland. This will increase instability further through the interior with some showers and thunderstorms expected, mostly near the western border. Hot northwesterly winds will extend through the southern inland to the southern coast, with possible isolated afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms about southeast districts south of Fraser Island. A moist and unstable airmass will maintain isolated showers and thunderstorms through the tropics north of about Cairns. A weak onshore wind flow will result in mostly fine conditions about the remaining east tropical and central coasts.Sunday 16 FebruaryThe trough will most likely shift east over the interior of the state while the deep low should move north over the Northern Territory close to our western border. Moisture and instability will increase further in the far west of the state, with showers and storms becoming more widespread. More isolated shower and thunderstorm activity is expected through the remaining southern interior and southeast due to the passage of the trough. Instability will also increase through the north of the state, with isolated to scattered showers and storms expected, mostly inland. Hot conditions will persist over the southeast of the state, while a much cooler day is expected in the far west under the cloud band.Monday 17 FebruaryThe upper trough will most likely contract off the southern Queensland coast during Monday with cooler conditions spreading into the far southern interior of the state. Moist and unstable conditions are likely persist over much of the state with isolated showers and thunderstorms over most parts, increasing to scattered through the tropics.Tuesday until ThursdayAnother upper trough is likely to progress across the south of the state during the outlook period. A surface trough in the southwest on Tuesday is expected to move only slowly north and east through the outlook period to lie from the northwest of the state into the far southeast by late Thursday. Isolated showers and thunderstorms should persist to the north of the trough, tending scattered in the tropics.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Friday.Product IDQ10700
