MELBOURNE - Feb 13/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A high pressure system is located over the Tasman Sea and is drifting slowly eastwards. Meanwhile, a broad low pressure system over South Australia will move across southern New South Wales and far northwest Victoria on Friday. The trough will move across Victoria on Saturday, with a low pressure centre expected to form just east of Gippsland Saturday night. The low will move away across the Tasman Sea on Sunday whilst the next ridge of high pressure moves from the Bight towards western Victoria. The high pressure ridge will cross Victoria on Monday and a cold front moves from the Southern Ocean towards Tasmania. Forecast for the rest of ThursdaySmoke haze particularly over southern and eastern Victoria. Areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms over northwest. Isolated showers elsewhere with the risk of thunderstorms over the far eastern ranges at first this evening. Generally light winds.Friday 14 FebruaryAreas of rain over far northwest Victoria with heavy falls developing and the chance of thunderstorms. Isolated showers possible over most remaining districts, becoming scattered about the far east with the chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Smoke haze particularly over southern and eastern Victoria. Generally mild with light winds and afternoon coastal seabreezes.Fire Danger - Locally high in the Southwest and Central districts, generally low to moderate elsewhere.Saturday 15 FebruaryAreas of rain near the northern border contracting to northeast Victoria by early afternoon then easing to showers. Scattered showers developing elsewhere and the risk of thunderstorms over Gippsland. Smoke haze contracting to the east. Mild in the south but a little warmer across the north. Moderate to fresh southwesterly winds extending eastwards during the day.Sunday 16 FebruaryCool to mild and on and south of the ranges with scattered showers, more frequent over far eastern areas. Isolated showers penetrating just north of the divide, but dry, mild and generally sunny over the northwest. Moderate to fresh southwest to southerly winds.Monday 17 FebruaryIsolated showers over the southeast clearing during the morning. Dry elsewhere.
