Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 12/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A broad area of low pressure and associated shower and thunderstorm activity extends from the Northern Territory into northwestern Queensland, while a ridge of high pressure dominates weather through much of the east of the state. The ridge will become more extensive during today and Thursday, reducing shower and storm activity over much of the state. A new trough will most likely approach the southwest of the state on Friday.
Forecast for the rest of WednesdayScattered showers about the northeast tropical coast, decreasing to isolated during the day. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms elsewhere over the northern tropics, more frequent in the far north. Possible isolated showers about the remaining east coast near and north of Fraser Island. Possible isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms in the southwest and also about the southeastern interior, particularly near the New South Wales border. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A hot day over the southern interior with moderate north to northeasterly winds. Moderate southeast to northeasterly winds elsewhere, fresh and gusty at times along much of the east coast.Fire Danger -  High to Very High over much of the interior.Thursday 13 FebruaryIsolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur through areas northwest of about Mount Isa to Cooktown in a moist and unstable airmass, particularly near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and northern Cape York Peninsula. A weak onshore wind flow will result in isolated showers about the remaining east coast, mostly north of about Mackay. Mostly fine conditions will occur over the interior, with just the chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms extending from the New South Wales border to the Carnarvon ranges. Hot conditions will continue over the southern interior.Friday 14 FebruaryThe ridge along the east Queensland coast will weaken further, with just the chance of isolated showers occurring about the exposed east coast. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will persist through the Peninsula and Gulf Country. A new trough will likely approach southwestern Queensland, extending high cloud through the south of the state and increasing in instability through the southern interior, with possible isolated showers and thunderstorms expected, mostly about the NSW border from the west to the Darling Downs. A ridge will maintain fine and mostly sunny conditions over the remaining interior. Northwesterly winds ahead of the trough will result in hot conditions through the southwest.Saturday 15 FebruaryThe new trough will most likely enter the far west of the state, increasing instability further through the interior with some showers and thunderstorms expected, mostly near the southwestern border. A moist and unstable airmass will maintain isolated showers and thunderstorms through the tropics north of about Cairns, with isolated showers about the remaining east tropical coast, central coast and adjacent inland. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere. Warm to hot conditions will likely spread from the southwest of the state into the southeast, particularly inland parts.Sunday until TuesdayThe trough will most likely remain over the interior of the state during the outlook period, though its movement is still quite uncertain at this stage. Unstable conditions will spread through much of the state with showers and thunderstorms expected, particularly near the trough where they could become quite widespread. Showers and thunderstorms should also become more widespread through the tropics as a moist airmass feeds into the trough through the interior. Warm to hot conditions are likely in the southeast and east, ahead of the surface trough and particularly over inland parts.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Wednesday.Product IDQ10700
