MELBOURNE - Feb 2/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation The monsoon trough is expected to remain active over the Gulf of Carpentaria and through the Coral Sea during the next week. A low is expected to deepen over southeastern Gulf of Carpentaria waters during today and Tuesday. The monsoon trough will move north through the eastern Queensland tropics during today and tomorrow before becoming slow moving near Cooktown from Tuesday. Further lows may develop on the monsoon trough over the Coral Sea during the forecast period. A high over the southern Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge into central and southern Queensland waters. A new high will enter the Tasman Sea on Wednesday, reinforcing the ridge. Forecast for the rest of MondayCloudy with showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms north of about Camooweal to Ingham with moderate to locally heavy falls likely. Scattered showers and thunderstorms through remaining areas west of about Richmond to Windorah. Partly cloudy with isolated showers over eastern districts and the central interior. Fine and mostly sunny over the southern interior and central west. Fresh and gusty west to northwesterly winds through the far northern tropics, strengthening through the Gulf of Carpentaria. Moderate to fresh east to southeasterly winds elsewhere, strong at times about the east coast between Cardwell and Fraser Island.Fire Danger - High to Very High over much of the south and southwestern interior.Tuesday 4 FebruaryThe monsoon trough is likely to remain active through the tropics though should shift further north to extend from Cooktown to the deepening low/tropical cyclone in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. Rain areas, showers and thunderstorms will continue near and to the north of the monsoon trough with some locally heavy falls likely. A firm ridge of high pressure will dominate weather to the south of the monsoon trough, with isolated showers expected about the east coast and near the western border, more scattered with possible storms closer to the monsoon trough. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected over the remainder of the state.Wednesday 5 FebruaryThe monsoon trough should become slow moving from about Cooktown to the low/tropical cyclone near the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Rain areas, showers and thunderstorms will continue near and to the north of the monsoon trough with some locally heavy falls likely. A new high will enter the Tasman Sea, reinforcing the ridge along the east Queensland coast to the south of the monsoon trough. Isolated showers will occur about the east coast in the onshore wind flow, more scattered with possible thunderstorms closer to the monsoon trough. An upper trough and some high cloud will most likely enter the southwest of the state though no rainfall is expected.Thursday 6 FebruaryThe new high over the Tasman Sea will extend a firm ridge through central and southern Queensland. The monsoon trough will continue to extend from about Cooktown to the low near the southwestern Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Rain areas and storms with moderate to locally heavy falls will persist north of the monsoon trough. Isolated to scattered showers will occur about eastern districts and the remaining tropics in the fresh and moist onshore wind flow, with possible thunderstorms north of about Mackay closer to the monsoon trough. Some high cloud will persist near the upper trough over the southern interior though no rainfall is expected.Friday until SundayThe high will remain slow moving over the Tasman Sea, maintaining a firm ridge through central and southern Queensland waters during the outlook period. The ridge will possibly extend north to Torres Strait waters though this depends on the development and movement of the monsoon trough and any associated lows. The monsoon will likely remain active through the Gulf of Carpentaria during the outlook period. Rain areas through the far northern tropics should gradually decrease to showers if the ridge does indeed extend further north, while rain areas should persist through the Gulf of Carpentaria and into the far northwest of the state. Showers will continue about the east coast in the moist onshore wind flow. A trough over the Coral Sea will most likely shift west during the weekend, gradually enhancing showers about the east Queensland coast. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Monday.Product IDQ10700 Notice Board Queensland's improving weather services Northwest Queensland weather radar installation complete Media Releases Marketing Meteorological Offices Cairns weather Charleville weather Longreach weather Mackay weather Mount Isa weather Rockhampton weather Townsville weather Weipa weather Other Information About Weather Forecast Services About Warning Services Warnings Water Climate Environment Tropical Cyclones Tsunami Warning Centre Agriculture - Water and the Land Marine & Ocean UV & Sun Protection Rainfall & River Conditions Graphical Views Radar Maps Rainfall Forecasts Seasonal Outlooks Climate Variability & Change Climate Data Online Seasonal Streamflow Forecasts Water Storage MetEye™ National Weather Services Aviation Weather Services Defence Services Space Weather Services Registered User Services Commercial Weather Services Business Entry Point Facebook Google+ Youtube Blog Careers Sitemap Feedback Freedom of Information Indigenous Weather Knowledge Glossary This page was created at 01:45 on Monday 3 February 2014 (GMT) © Copyright Commonwealth of Australia 2014, Bureau of Meteorology (ABN 92 637 533 532) | Disclaimer | Privacy | Accessibility var hostname = window.location.hostname; var host = hostname.split("."); if (host[0] == "reg") var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-20386085-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); else if (host[0] == "www") var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-3816559-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); else if (host[0] == "wdev") var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-21709175-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); (function() { var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true; ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ?
