Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 1/14 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
The monsoon trough is expected to remain active over the Gulf of Carpentaria and through the Coral Sea during the next week. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Edna is gradually drifting northwards, away from the Central Coast of Queensland. The monsoon trough and low will continue moving north over the Coral Sea during today and Monday in response to a strong ridge building along the southern and central Queensland coasts. Another low may develop over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria during the forecast period.
Forecast for the rest of SundayRain areas and possible thunderstorms about the northern central coast, decreasing to showers during the morning. Cloudy with rain areas, showers and thunderstorms through the Peninsula and near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Showers increasing about the northeast tropical coast, with possible thunderstorms developing and tending to thundery rain at night. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms in the northwest. Scattered showers and thunderstorms elsewhere north and west of Longreach. Remaining cloudy and cool through the central interior and into the central west and southwest with isolated showers. Isolated showers about the southeast coast, extending west to the ranges during the day. Fine and mostly sunny over the southern interior. Fresh and gusty west to northwest winds through the far northern tropics. Moderate to fresh and gusty southeast to northeast winds elsewhere, tending strong east to southeasterly about the east coast between Cardwell and Fraser Island and reaching Gale force at times about the exposed Central Coast and islands.Fire Danger - Very High in the southern interior and southwest.Monday 3 FebruaryThe monsoon trough should continue to strengthen across the northern tropics while a high in the Tasman Sea should extend a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. A low may develop on the monsoon trough through the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. Scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the north of the state due to the presence of the monsoon trough with moderate to locally heavy falls likely. A moist northeasterly wind flow will result in scattered showers and thunderstorms through the far west of the state. The ridge to the south of the monsoon trough will maintain mostly fine conditions about much of central and southern Queensland, with only isolated light showers expected, mostly near the coast in the onshore wind flow.Tuesday 4 FebruaryThe monsoon trough is likely to remain active through the tropics though should shift further north to extend from Cooktown to a low in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. Rain areas, showers and thunderstorms will continue near and to the north of the monsoon trough with some locally heavy falls likely. A firm ridge of high pressure will dominate weather to the south of the monsoon trough, with isolated showers expected about the east coast and near the western border, more scattered with possible storms closer to the monsoon trough. Fine and mostly conditions are expected over the remainder of the state.Wednesday 5 FebruaryThe monsoon trough should become slow moving from about Cooktown to a low over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. Rain areas, showers and thunderstorms will continue near and to the north of the monsoon trough with some locally heavy falls likely. A new high will enter the Tasman Sea, reinforcing the ridge along the east Queensland coast to the south of the monsoon trough. Isolated showers will occur about the east coast in the onshore wind flow, more scattered with possible thunderstorms closer to the monsoon trough. An upper trough and some high cloud will most likely enter the southwest of the state though with little or no rainfall expected.Thursday until SaturdayThe new high over the Tasman Sea will extend a firm ridge through central and southern Queensland waters during the outlook period. The ridge will possibly extend north to Torres Strait waters though this depends on the development and movement of the monsoon trough and any associated lows. The monsoon will likely remain active through the Gulf of Carpentaria during the outlook period. Rain areas through the far northern tropics should gradually decrease to showers if the ridge does indeed extend further north, while rain areas should persist through the Gulf of Carpentaria and into the far northwest of the state. Showers will continue about the east coast in the moist onshore wind flow. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Sunday.Product IDQ10700
