Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Oct 24/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A weak trough lies from the northwest of the state to the southeast interior and will remain slow moving over the weekend. A coastal trough is moving north through southern Queensland waters and is expected to reach Capricornia waters this afternoon. A high over South Australia extends a ridge along the east coast of Queensland in the wake of the trough and the ridge should persist along the east coast over the weekend.
Forecast for the rest of FridayIsolated showers increasing to scattered through the southern Central Highlands, Capricornia and northern Wide Bay with isolated thunderstorms possible. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are also possible through the central west into the tropical interior and southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Isolated showers will occur over the southeast near and east of the Great Dividing Range. Moderate to fresh and gusty south to southeasterly winds over the interior. Mostly moderate northeast to northwesterly winds elsewhere, ahead of a strong south to southeasterly change moving through southern waters during the day.Fire Danger -  Severe in the western and Central West districts. Very High in the remainder.Saturday 26 OctoberMost of the unstable conditions and thunderstorm activity should contract offshore with the passage of an upper level trough, however isolated showers are expected to persist over the Capricornia, Central Coast and adjacent inland. The coastal trough will weaken near the central coast leading isolated showers. The high will move slowly east towards southeastern Australia, extending a ridge along the east Queensland coast with isolated showers along much of the remainder of the coast. Thunderstorm activity remains likely near the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast.Sunday 27 OctoberThe high will move through southern Australia and weaken but will continue to extend a ridge along the eastern Queensland coast. Isolated showers are expected in the east in the onshore flow, scattered about the southeast coast during the morning. Isolated showers and thunderstorms area again likely near the western parts of the Gulf Country Districts, potentially extending south into the North West District. The remainder of the state should remain fine.Monday 28 OctoberThe high will move into the Tasman Sea and continue to extend a ridge along the eastern Queensland coast during Monday. Isolated showers are possible along the northeast coast as the ridge weakens and a new trough system enters western Queensland. There is some uncertainty about the development of the next upper trough but the atmosphere will destabilise ahead of the trough in western and southern Queensland, with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms expected in a band from the Gulf of Carpentaria through the central interior to the southeast.Tuesday until ThursdayThe high will move east across the Tasman Sea and maintain a ridge along the eastern Queensland coast during Tuesday, with the ridge weakening ahead of the next surface trough moving across the southern interior. There is some uncertainty with the speed of movement of the trough, and it may reach the southeast coast on Wednesday or Thursday, with the potential for showers and thunderstorms generally near and east of the trough. Remaining mostly fine in the northern parts of the state, apart from isolated showers about the Peninsula Coast and the Gulf of Carpentaria.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Friday.Product IDQ10700
