MELBOURNE - Oct 23/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A surface trough lies from the northwest of the state into the southeast interior of Queensland and is expected to contract off the southeast coast late this evening. A high in the Great Australian Bight will extend a ridge over western Queensland in the wake of the trough. The trough is expected to move north through southern Queensland waters into Capricornia waters on Friday whilst the inland portion of the trough is expected to remain slow moving through the central interior. Forecast for the rest of ThursdayScattered showers and gusty thunderstorms developing in the southeast districts with the possibility of some severe thunderstorms. Isolated showers and thunderstorms elsewhere in a band stretching from the Gulf Country and western Cape York Peninsula, through the central interior and into the southeast interior. Isolated showers possible over the far northeast tropics. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Moderate to fresh and gusty southwest to southeasterly winds over the interior. Mostly moderate southeast to northeasterly winds elsewhere, fresh to strong over southern waters.Fire Danger - High to Very High across the state.Friday 25 OctoberThe trough and an associated cooler south to southeasterly wind change are expected to move north through southern Queensland waters into Capricornia waters. The inland portion of the trough is expected to remain slow moving through the central interior. This will result in isolated showers increasing to scattered through the central interior, Capricornia and northern Wide Bay with isolated gusty thunderstorms possible. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are also possible near the trough through the central west into the tropical interior and southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Isolated showers will occur over the southeast near and east of the Great Dividing Range in a moist onshore wind flow and should be more scattered near the coast during the morning due to the trough passage. Isolated light showers will also possibly develop over the northeast tropical coast.Saturday 26 OctoberMost of the unstable conditions and thunderstorm activity should contract offshore with the passage of an upper level trough, however isolated showers are expected to persist over the Capricornia, Central Coast and adjacent inland. The coastal trough will weaken near the central coast leading to scattered showers about the coast during the morning, easing to isolated during the day. The high will move slowly east towards southeastern Australia, extending a ridge along the east Queensland coast with isolated showers along much of the remainder of the coast. Thunderstorm activity remains likely near the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast.Sunday 27 OctoberThe high will move through southern Australia and weaken but will continue to extend a ridge along the eastern Queensland coast. Isolated showers are expected in the east in the onshore flow but much of the state should remain fine. Isolated showers and thunderstorms area again likely near the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast.Monday until WednesdayThe high will move into the Tasman Sea and continue to extend a ridge along the eastern Queensland coast during Monday. Isolated showers are possible along the northeast coast on Monday as the ridge weakens and a new trough system enters western Queensland. There is some uncertainty about the development of the next upper trough but the atmosphere will destabilise ahead of the trough in western and southern Queensland on Monday. The trough is then likely to move eastwards on Tuesday and Wednesday, increasing the potential of showers and thunderstorms generally near and east of the trough. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Thursday.Product IDQ10700 Notice Board Queensland's improving weather services Northwest Queensland weather radar installation complete Media Releases Marketing Meteorological Offices Cairns weather Charleville weather Longreach weather Mackay weather Mount Isa weather Rockhampton weather Townsville weather Weipa weather Other Information About Weather Forecast Services About Warning Services Warnings Water Climate Environment Tropical Cyclones Tsunami Warning Centre Agriculture - Water and the Land Marine & Ocean UV & Sun Protection Rainfall & River Conditions Graphical Views Radar Maps Rainfall Forecasts Seasonal Outlooks Climate Variability & Change Climate Data Online Seasonal Streamflow Forecasts Water Storage MetEye™ National Weather Services Aviation Weather Services Defence Services Space Weather Services Registered User Services Commercial Weather Services Business Entry Point Facebook Google+ Youtube Blog Careers Sitemap Feedback Freedom of Information Indigenous Weather Knowledge Glossary This page was created at 23:30 on Wednesday 23 October 2013 (GMT) © Copyright Commonwealth of Australia 2013, Bureau of Meteorology (ABN 92 637 533 532) | Disclaimer | Privacy | Accessibility var hostname = window.location.hostname; var host = hostname.split("."); if (host[0] == "reg") var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-20386085-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); else if (host[0] == "www") var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-3816559-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); else if (host[0] == "wdev") var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-21709175-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); (function() { var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true; ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ?
