Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Oct 19/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high (1032 hPa) over the Tasman Sea will maintain a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast during the weekend. The ridge will then gradually relax from Monday as the high shifts further east and weakens. A surface trough extends through northwestern Queensland and is expected to weaken on Sunday. A new surface trough will enter western Queensland on Tuesday. A mid level trough will most likely enhance shower activity over the northeast tropical coast during Monday and Tuesday.
Forecast for the rest of SaturdayIsolated showers along the east coast, mostly north of Fraser Island and increasing to scattered through Torres Strait during the evening. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the western Gulf Country and through the southern tropical interior and central west, clearing this evening. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Fresh southeasterly winds along the east coast north of Fraser Island, strong at times north of Cooktown. Mostly moderate southeast to northeasterly winds elsewhere.Sunday 20 OctoberScattered showers developing about Fraser Island and along the Wide Bay and southern Capricornia coasts, decreasing to isolated during the afternoon and extending west through the southeast inland. Scattered showers through Torres Strait, decreasing to isolated during the day. Isolated showers elsewhere about the east coast and adjacent inland. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms about the far western Gulf Country. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A hot day in western districts, particularly the southwest, with moderate to fresh and gusty northwest to northeasterly winds. Fresh southeasterly winds about the east coast north of about Gladstone. Mostly moderate southeast to northeast winds elsewhere, fresh at times through the tropical interior.Fire Danger - Very High over much of the interior, increasing to Severe in the North West and Channel Country.Monday 21 OctoberThe high will move further east and weaken, with the associated ridge along the east Queensland coast gradually relaxing. A mid level trough over the western Coral Sea is expected to shift west, enhancing shower activity about the northeast tropical coast, particularly during the evening. Isolated showers will persist along the remaining east coast near and north of Fraser Island in a moist onshore wind flow. A moist and weakly unstable environment may produce isolated showers and thunderstorms again in the far western Gulf Country district. A new trough will approach southwestern Queensland, with possible isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms developing southwest of about Quilpie late in the day though with little or no rainfall expected. Fine and mostly conditions are expected elsewhere. Hot conditions and elevated fire dangers will persist in the southern interior and spread east into the Darling Downs due to fresh and gusty northerly winds ahead of the surface trough.Tuesday 22 OctoberThe trough will enter the southwest of the state, resulting in increasing cloud through the southwest with possible isolated showers and thunderstorms, though little or no rainfall is expected. Hot conditions and elevated fire dangers will persist through the southern and southeastern interior in the fresh and gusty northerly wind flow ahead of the trough, particularly through the southwest. The ridge along the east Queensland coast will weaken further, while the mid level trough will continue to generate enhanced showers about the northeast tropical coast. More isolated shower activity is expected about the remaining east coast north of about Gladstone. Isolated thunderstorms will possibly develop about the western Peninsula late at night. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere.Wednesday 23 OctoberThe trough will move eastwards over the interior of the state and will most likely extend from the Gulf Country to the western Darling Downs at night. Cloud will increase further through the southern interior with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms expected, particularly near the southern border. The ridge will relax further along the east Queensland coast and the mid level trough will shift further west, resulting in a decrease in shower activity along the northeast tropical coast. The mid level trough will most likely result in isolated showers developing further inland through the Peninsula district, with possible late thunderstorms expected again about the west Peninsula coast. Isolated light showers will possibly occur about the central and Capricorn coasts in an onshore wind flow. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere. The hot conditions and enhanced fire dangers will spread through the Maranoa and Warrego into southeast districts in the moderate to fresh and gusty north to northeasterly wind flow ahead of the trough. A cooler, fresh and gusty south to southwesterly wind flow will develop in the wake of the trough.Thursday until SaturdayThe trough will continue moving eastwards on Thursday and will most likely contract off the southern Queensland coast late in the day. The trough is expected to generate showers and isolated thunderstorms over southeast and southern central districts with its passage, contracting to areas north of about Fraser Island on Friday as a cooler south to southeasterly wind change extends through areas to the south. A weak trough will extend through the central and southeast interior on Saturday, with isolated showers expected to its east. Isolated storms will remain possible about the western Peninsula coast on Thursday though should focus more on the Gulf Country coast from Friday as the instability shifts west. Only isolated showers are expected about the eastern tropics during the outlook period, mostly near the east Peninsula coast. A large high will move east over the Great Australian Bight towards southeastern Australia during the outlook period, extending a firm ridge and dry conditions into western Queensland. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Sunday.Product IDQ10700
