Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Oct 10/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high (1020 hPa) over the far southern Coral Sea is expected to move slowly eastwards during the next few days. The high extends a ridge along the tropical east Queensland coast. A vigorous surface trough will enter the southwest of the state this evening and then move across western and southern Queensland during Friday before weakening on Saturday. Another vigorous trough and associated upper level trough is expected to move across western and southern inland districts on Sunday, reaching the southeast on Monday.
Forecast for the rest of ThursdayPartly cloudy but mostly fine with only isolated showers along parts of the north tropical coast. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere, though some raised dust in the west and southern interior. Moderate to fresh east to southeasterly winds over the northeast tropics, shifting northeast to northwesterly elsewhere. Moderate to fresh and gusty northeast to northwesterly winds over the west and south of the state, strengthening along the far southern coast in the evening, ahead of a fresh to strong and gusty southerly change over the far southwest of the state during the evening.Friday 11 OctoberPartly cloudy but mostly fine with only isolated showers along parts of the north tropical coast. Becoming cloudy with isolated showers about the far southeast late in the day or night. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere, though some raised dust in the west and southern interior during the morning. A hot day in the southeast. Moderate to fresh east to southeasterly winds over the far northeast tropics, shifting northeast to northwesterly elsewhere ahead of a moderate to fresh and gusty southwest to southeasterly change across the west and south.Fire Danger - Severe in the southeast of the state, generally High to Very High elsewhere.Saturday 12 OctoberThe surface trough is expected to lie over the west and southern interior of the state, while the coastal southeasterly change is expected to have moved north to near the Wide Bay and weaken during the day. A weak upper trough is expected to move across southern Queensland, and combined with the surface trough and coastal change is expected to produce cloudy conditions with morning drizzle or light showers over the Southeast Coast, tending to isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, as well as spreading to the remaining southeast districts and possibly into the central interior. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere, apart from isolated showers about the tropical east coast and northern Cape York Peninsula. Increasing high cloud over the southwest but no rain is expected at this stage.Sunday 13 OctoberA new vigorous trough is expected to move across western and southern inland districts during the day, and combined with another upper level trough moving over New South Wales and southwest Queensland is likely to bring increasing cloud over the southwest of the state and possible isolated showers or thunderstorms near the New South Wales border. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are likely to spread across the southern and southeast interior as the trough moves eastwards during the day, reaching the inland southeast coastal districts late in the day or night. Increasing instability is expected to lead to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about western Cape York Peninsula in the afternoon and evening. Increasing northeast to northwesterly winds over the west and south of the state ahead of the trough are likely to bring an increase in temperatures and enhanced fire danger to these areas, with fresh to strong and gusty south to southwesterly winds expected to spread over western districts in the wake of the trough with some raised dust possible. Isolated showers remain likely about the tropical east coast due to a ridge and associated onshore flow.Monday 14 OctoberThe trough is expected to move northeastwards and off the southern Queensland coast on Monday, followed by a strong south to southeasterly change along this part of the coast. Cloudy conditions with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms are expected about southeast districts associated with the trough passage. Isolated showers are likely to persist about parts of the tropical east coast, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms likely about northern and western Cape York Peninsula. Cooler southwest to southeasterly winds across the west and south of the state.Tuesday until ThursdayThe fresh and gusty coastal southeasterly change is expected to move northwards into central districts on Tuesday and into the southern tropics on Wednesday before weakening, while the inland section of the trough is expected to lie over the central interior. This combined with another upper level trough moving into western Queensland on Wednesday and across the state on Thursday is expected to produce scattered showers and possible thunderstorms over central districts and into the southern and southeast interior. Isolated to scattered showers should also continue over the remaining northern and eastern tropics in the onshore airflow as a new high moves into and across the Tasman Sea. Isolated thunderstorms may also still occur over the far northern tropics. Generally fine over the far southeast and west of the state. A cool morning is expected in the south and west of the state on Tuesday morning. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Friday.Product IDQ10700
