MELBOURNE - Sep 29/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Fire Weather Warning is current for the Darling Downs today, and for the Channel Country and parts of the Central West and Northwest districts for Monday. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A surface trough stretches from the northwest of the state to the southeast coast. A high over the eastern Tasman Sea extends a weak ridge along the Queensland tropical east coast. A high pressure system over South Australia extends a strengthening ridge over southwestern Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Areas of patchy, mainly light rain over the northwest of the state. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in a band from the northwest to the southeast corner. Fine though partly cloudy over the far southern districts, and mainly fine over the Peninsula district except for some isolated, mainly light showers about the east coast of Cape York Peninsula. Light to moderate east to southeast winds. Forecast for Monday Isolated showers along the tropical east coast. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms developing along a surface trough over the central and southeast interior, whilst it should be mostly fine in the far northwest of the state with just the chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Maximum temperatures will continue to be above the September average across most of the state. Forecast for Tuesday The high in the Tasman Sea should move towards New Zealand as another high builds over Western Australia. A strong upper level trough and cold front will enter southwestern Queensland during the day and progress rapidly eastwards across the south of the state, generating rain areas and scattered thunderstorms, and this activity may reach the southeast coast late in the evening. Hot and gusty NW'ly winds ahead of a sharp SW'ly wind change with the front will result in elevated fire dangers, particularly over southern districts. Isolated showers will continue along the northeast tropical coast in a moist onshore flow, and there is also the chance of some morning drizzle about the Central Highlands. Maximum temperatures will continue to be above average across most of the state, although cooler conditions will spread across the southwest in the wake of the front. Forecast for Wednesday The upper level trough should continue to move northeastwards, generating patchy rain areas over the southeast corner, clearing offshore in the morning. Isolated showers and thunderstorms should then redevelop from the in a band from the northwest through the central highlands to the southeast corner during the day. Isolated showers will continue along the east tropical coast in a moist onshore flow. Forecast for Thursday The upper trough will move northwards into the tropics, while a second upper trough will move rapidly eastwards across southern Queensland. A surface trough over the eastern inland to the Sunshine Coast will strengthen in response. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop over eastern districts to the east of the surface trough, possibly as far north as the Atherton Tablelands. Some high cloud will accompany the second upper trough across the southern inland, but no rainfall is expected with this feature. A large high over the Great Australian Bight will extend a firm ridge into western Queensland, leading to fine conditions and fresh southerly winds. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The trough over eastern Queensland will move northwards along the east coast as a southerly change, as the large high over South Australia moves slowly eastwards and extends a strengthening ridge over southern Queensland. Over the weekend, this ridge will develop along the entire east coast, with fresh southeasterly trade winds returning to eastern districts. A few showers will develop along the east coast and nearby inland, tending more scattered near the trough. It should be fine and mainly sunny over the interior with temperatures returning to near or just above average. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Monday.
