Weather Situation
A vigorous trough lies from the northwest of the state to the southeast
interior and is expected to contract off the southern Queensland coast late
tonight or early Friday. The trough and a strong south to southeasterly wind
change will extend northwards over southern waters, reaching the Capricornia
during Friday afternoon. A weak upper trough should move east across the south
of the state on Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in band stretching from the
northwest of the state, through the central west, southern Central Highlands and
into the Wide Bay and southern Capricornia districts. Areas of raised dust
through parts of the central and southern interior. Fresh NW to NE winds along
the central and southern coasts. Moderate to fresh and gusty NW'ly winds over
the central inland ahead of a cooler, fresh to strong and gusty S to SW change,
already over the southern interior that will extend northwards. Moderate SE to
NE winds over the northern tropics, shifting NE to NW over the tropical
interior. An Extreme fire danger over the southeastern interior between about
Mitchell and Inglewood. A Severe Fire Danger over remaining western districts
and much of the southeast and central inland [refer to the Fire Weather
Warning]. A High to Very High Fire Danger over much of the remainder of the
state.
Forecast for Friday
Cloud should increase from the west over the interior of the state. Isolated
showers and gusty thunderstorms are possible through western and central
districts north of about Charleville, though with little rainfall expected. The
far northeast of the state should remain fine and mostly sunny after early fog
patches about the coast and ranges. Early morning fog patches about the
east coast and adjacent inland. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds, tending S'ly
over the southwest of the state during the day. A fresh to strong S to SE wind
change will move north through southern coastal waters early in the day,
reaching Capricornia waters late in the afternoon. Although temperatures will
fall several degrees over the central and southern interior compared to
Thursday, temperatures will continue to be above the September average across
much of the state. A Severe fire danger in the Channel Country. A Very High fire
danger through much of the remainder of the state.
Forecast for Saturday
A high over the Tasman Sea will move eastwards and weaken as another high
builds over southern Australia. An upper level and surface trough will enter the
southwest of the state early on Saturday and move rapidly eastwards, extending a
band of cloud and patchy rain through western, central and southeastern
districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are likely ahead of the surface
trough, increasing to scattered in the afternoon and evening over central
districts. Maximum temperatures will continue to be above the September average
across the state, but should be relatively cooler compared to previous days due
to the cloud cover.
Forecast for Sunday
The high over southeastern Australia will move eastwards towards the New
South Wales coast. The upper level and surface trough will move northeast,
contracting off the southern coast during the morning to extend from the
northwest of the state to Fraser Island by the afternoon. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms will remain possible to the northeast of the trough, particularly
over central districts under a more moist, onshore wind flow. A moist E'ly wind
flow will also result in the development of isolated showers about the northeast
tropical coast. Maximum temperatures will continue to be above the September
average across the state.
Forecast for Monday
The high the should continue eastwards across the southern Coral Sea with a
moist onshore flows along the east coast. Isolated showers are expected along
much of the east coast with possible thunderstorms about the central and
southern coasts and adjacent inland. Isolated showers and thunderstorms may also
extend to the tropical interior and northwest of the state. Fine and mostly
sunny elsewhere. Maximum temperatures will continue to be above the September
average across most of the state.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
A new trough will most likely enter southwestern Queensland on Tuesday and
shift east into eastern districts on Wednesday, generating isolated showers and
thunderstorms with its passage. There is some uncertainty regarding the
eastwards progression of the trough on Thursday but the trough should contract
off the southeast coast during Thursday. Hot conditions will again develop
through much of the state ahead of this trough, particularly the interior.
Isolated showers will continue about the north tropical during the outlook
period.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
