Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Sep 15/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Fire Weather Warning is current for the Channel Country and
Central West districts.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1018 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a weak ridge along the
northeast tropical Queensland coast. A surface trough extends over the central
interior to the southeast Queensland coast and is expected to shift east off the
southern coast during this morning. The trough will then progress north through
southern Queensland waters before becoming slow moving near Fraser Island in the
afternoon. A second trough will approach the southwestern Queensland border late
tonight, with an associated cloud band extending over western and southern
Queensland ahead of the trough.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Cloudy with patchy rain, isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms over the
west, and through the central and southern interior, increasing over the
southwest during the afternoon and evening. Partly cloudy over southern central
districts and northern parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett district with isolated
afternoon and evening showers and gusty thunderstorms. Isolated showers over the
northeast Peninsula. A partly cloudy afternoon over the Gulf Country with
possible isolated light showers. Morning fogs in the east and about the southern
Gulf coast. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds
over the northern tropics. A warm to hot day over remaining parts of the state
with moderate to fresh and gusty NW to NE winds, tending SE to NE over southeast
districts. A Severe fire danger in the Channel Country and Central West
districts. A Very High fire danger over much of the remainder of the state apart
from the far northern and eastern tropics and the Southeast Coast district.
Forecast for Monday
The trough is expected to move east across the interior of the state during
the day, extending cloud through the central and southern interior with patchy
rain, showers and gusty thunderstorms expected. This activity should then
gradually clear areas southwest of about Mount Isa to Cunnamulla during the
afternoon and evening. Cloud will also increase through southeast districts with
showers and drizzle, increasing to rain areas with possible gusty thunderstorms
from the west during the evening. Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms will
most likely develop through the Gulf Country and northern interior ahead of the
trough passage. Isolated light showers are expected over the northeastern
Peninsula district. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will occur elsewhere after
some early fogs about the eastern tropics. A cooler day is expected under the
increasing cloud through southern districts, though fresh and gusty winds
associated with the trough passage will still most likely lead to enhanced fire
dangers. Strong N'ly winds are also likely to develop over far southern
Queensland waters late in the day.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper trough will most likely contract off the southern Queensland coast
during the day while the low level trough should become slow moving over the
southeast inland during the afternoon. This will result in the cloud band and
associated thundery rain and showers clearing southeast and central districts
during the morning. Given the low level trough remains inland however there is
the chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms developing east of the Great
Dividing Range in the wake of the cloud band during the afternoon. Some cloud
will persist through the northern interior and Gulf Country though with just the
chance of isolated showers. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected
elsewhere. Fresh to strong N'ly winds will persist over southern Queensland
waters.
Forecast for Wednesday
The low level trough will most likely weaken over far eastern Queensland but
still produce isolated showers and possible storms about the Capricornia and
Wide Bay and Burnett. Some patchy cloud will develop over the northeast tropics
during the day with possible isolated showers, mostly about the ranges. Dry W'ly
winds will extend through remaining parts of the state with fine and mostly
sunny conditions expected. A new surface trough will approach the southwestern
border of the state late at night.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The new surface trough will most likely move east over the southern interior
on Thursday, generally with little or no rainfall expected with its passage
though isolated showers or thunderstorms over eastern districts north from about
the Wide Bay and Burnett. Another trough will then enter western Queensland on
Friday and shift east into central and southeast districts on Saturday, with
showers and possible isolated thunderstorms in the moist and unstable
environment to its east. Conditions through the tropics should remain mostly
fine with just the chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms over the
northern interior in the increasingly unstable environment ahead of the troughs.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Sunday.
