web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1016 hPa] over the southeast Coral Sea extends a weak ridge along the
northeast tropical Queensland coast. A surface trough lies from the northwest to
over the central and southern interior, and is expected to move into the
southeast on Saturday.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Areas of cloud with isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northwest,
central and southern half of the state, tending to scattered showers and gusty
thunderstorms over the southern and southeast interior. Fine and mostly clear
over the northeast of the state. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds across the
Peninsula. Moderate to fresh NE to NW winds elsewhere ahead of a moderate to
fresh and gusty SW change over the west and southern interior.
Forecast for Saturday
Cloudy in the east in the morning, with early fogs in the tropics and some
drizzle areas over southeast districts. Early showers and possible thunderstorms
near the southern inland border areas. Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms
over southeast districts and the southern Capricornia in the afternoon and
evening. Fine and mostly sunny across the rest of the state, though partly
cloudy over the far northeast Peninsula with isolated light showers. A warm to
hot day across most areas. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds across the
Peninsula. Moderate to fresh NE to NW winds over eastern districts, shifting
gusty NW to SW'ly over the southeast inland. Mostly moderate SW to SE winds over
the remainder of the state. A Very High fire danger in most districts, apart
from the northeast tropical coast.
Forecast for Sunday
The surface trough over the southeast is expected to have moved offshore and
progress northwards along the southern Queensland coast as a SE'ly wind change
before weakening in the evening. Isolated afternoon showers may occur near and
just ahead of this change over the northern Wide Bay and Burnett and parts of
the Capricornia and Central Highlands. Meanwhile, a more significant surface and
upper trough system is expected to approach the southwest of the state during
the afternoon and evening. Cloud should increase with patchy rain and isolated
thunderstorms spreading east across western and southern Queensland during the
day, with showers and gusty thunderstorms expected to increase further over the
far southwest later in the day and at night as the surface trough nears that
area. An onshore flow is expected to bring isolated showers over northern Cape
York Peninsula. Hot, fresh and gusty NE to NW'ly winds over the interior with
enhanced fire dangers expected over the west, as well as the southern and
central interior ahead of the trough. Continuing fine and mostly sunny across
the rest of the state with maximum temperatures remaining well above the
September average.
Forecast for Monday
The surface and upper trough system is expected to move east across western
Queensland and the southern interior during the day. Cloudy with patchy rain,
showers and gusty thunderstorms over the west and southern interior, gradually
contracting into the central and southern interior as well as southeast
districts later in the day and at night. This activity is likely to be more
widespread over southern districts. Otherwise, an onshore flow is expected to
bring isolated showers over northern Cape York Peninsula. Hot, fresh and gusty
NE to NW'ly winds ahead of the trough over central and southern Queensland,
combined with drier fresh to strong and gusty W to SW'ly change in the wake of
the trough will lead to a particularly enhanced fire danger across western,
central and southern Queensland. Strong N'ly winds are also likely to develop
over far southern Queensland waters late in the day.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper trough is likely to move off the southern Queensland coast during
the day, with the surface trough moving offshore overnight. As a result, the
cloud band with patchy rain, showers and thunderstorms over central and
southeast districts should contract east and offshore by late in the day. Strong
N to NW'ly winds over southern Queensland waters ahead of the trough should
decrease later in the day. Dry, moderate to fresh and somewhat cooler gusty SW
to SE winds spreading across the interior with fine and mostly sunny conditions
expected.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
A new surface trough is expected to move into western Queensland during
Wednesday and move slowly east across central and southern Queensland during the
period, though the accompanying upper level troughs are expected to be weaker
than the system earlier in the week. As a result, there may be some high level
cloud but no significant rain is expected at this stage. However, isolated
showers may occur over the tropical north and east during this period where
moisture levels are higher. Temperatures are once again expected to increase to
well above average across most of the state with fire dangers also generally
increasing.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
