Weather Situation
A high [1018 hPa] over the southeast Coral Sea extends a weak ridge along the
northeast Queensland coast. A surface trough over the southwest is expected to
move east into the central and southern interior during today and into the
southeast on Saturday.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Areas of cloud with isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southern half
of the state, tending to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the
southeast interior late in the day. Fine though partly cloudy over the northern
half of the state. A very warm to hot day. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds
across the Peninsula. Moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere ahead of a moderate to
fresh and gusty SW change spreading across the west and southern interior.
Severe fire danger in the eastern Channel Country, southern Central West and
western Maranoa and Warrego districts. Very High fire dangers in the remaining
western, southern and central districts.
Forecast for Saturday
The surface trough will move east into the central interior and southeast of
the state. Cloudy with morning drizzle patches and isolated showers in the
southeast of the state. The unstable air mass ahead of the trough is expected to
bring early showers and possible thunderstorms to the southern inland border
areas, with isolated afternoon and evening showers and gusty thunderstorms near
and ahead of the trough over southeast districts, contracting offshore with the
trough overnight. It should be fine and mostly sunny across the rest of the
state with maximum temperatures remaining well above the September average.
Forecast for Sunday
A surface and upper trough are expected to approach the southwest of the
state during the afternoon and evening. Cloud should increase with patchy rain
and high based thunderstorms spreading east across western and southern
Queensland during the day, increasing over the far southwest later in the day
and at night. Hot, fresh and gusty NW'ly winds with enhanced fire dangers are
expected over the west, as well as the southern and central interior ahead of
the trough. Continuing fine and mostly sunny across the rest of the state with
maximum temperatures remaining well above the September average.
Forecast for Monday
The surface and upper trough are expected to move east across the southern
interior during the day, reaching the southeast during the evening and bringing
areas of rain, showers and thunderstorms; likely to be more widespread over
southern districts. Hot, fresh and gusty NW'ly winds with enhanced fire dangers
are expected over the southern and central interior of the state ahead of the
trough.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The upper trough is expected to move offshore on Tuesday with patchy rain,
showers and thunderstorms over central and southeast districts contracting east
and offshore by late in the day. Cloud should increase over the southwest on
Thursday with the approach of the next upper trough. Fine and mostly sunny
conditions should occur over remaining parts of the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
