Rice Crop Remains Below 2012

WASHINGTON - Sep 12/13 - SNS -- U.S. rice production is forecast at 185 million cwt (100 pound unites), up 2% from August but down 7% from last year, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.

Based on administrative data, planted area is now estimated at 2.49 million acres, up 1% from the June estimate but down 8% from last year. Area for harvest is expected to total 2.46 million acres, up 1% from August but 8% lower than 2012. Based on conditions as of September 1, the average United States yield is forecast at a record high 7,511 pounds per acre, up 105 pounds from August and up 62.0 pounds from last year. Record high yields are forecast in Louisiana and Missouri.

Harvest was underway by September 1 in all rice-producing States except California and Missouri, with 18% of the United States acreage harvested, 21 percentage points behind the same time last year and 7 percentage points behind the 5-year average. Seventy% of the United States acreage was rated in good to excellent condition as of September 1, compared with 68% rated in these two categories a year earlier.
