Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Sep 12/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Fire Weather Warning is current for parts of the Channel
Country for the remainder of today. A Fire Weather Warning has been issued for
parts of the Channel Country, Central West and Maranoa and Warrego districts for
Friday.

Weather Situation
A high [1018 hPa] is the Coral Sea extends a weak ridge along the northeast
coast of Queensland. A weak surface trough extends from the northwest to the
southeast corner of the state. A second, more significant trough system is
approaching the southwest of the state and is expected to move east across the
southern interior on Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Mid to high level cloud will extend across the far south and southwest of the
state with high based isolated showers and thunderstorms, though little if any
rainfall is expected to reach the ground. Fine and mostly clear over the
remainder of the state. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds across the Peninsula.
Light to moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere northeast of the trough, tending
fresh and gusty in the southeast. Winds becoming moderate W to SW southwest of
the trough. Severe fire danger in the western Channel Country district. Very
High fire dangers in the remaining western, southern and central districts.
Forecast for Friday
The cloud band with mid to high level cloud and isolated showers and high
based thunderstorms will move across the southern and southeast interior during
the day, gradually clearing from the west. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are
expected elsewhere in the state apart from eastern districts south of
Rockhampton where there may be some isolated afternoon showers and possible
thunderstorms. Maximum temperatures will continue to be well above the September
average across much of the state. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds across the
Peninsula. Light to moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere east of the trough, gusty
at times. Winds becoming moderate W to SW southwest of the trough. Severe fire
danger in the eastern Channel Country, southern Central West and western Maranoa
and Warrego districts. Very High fire dangers in the remaining western, southern
and central districts.
Forecast for Saturday
The surface trough will move slowly east with some early drizzle patches and
isolated showers in the southeast of the state in an increasingly unstable air
mass ahead of the trough, with isolated thunderstorms possible in the afternoon.
It will continue to be fine and mostly sunny across the rest of the state with
maximum temperatures remaining well above the September average.
Forecast for Sunday
A surface and upper trough are expected to move into the southwest of the
state during the afternoon. Cloud should increase over the southern interior
with high based thunderstorms and light patchy rain developing later in the day.
Hot, fresh and gusty NW'ly winds with enhanced fire dangers are expected over
the southern and central interior ahead of the trough. Continuing fine and
mostly sunny across the rest of the state with maximum temperatures remaining
well above the September average.
Forecast for Monday
A surface and upper trough are expected to move east across the southern
interior during the day, reaching the southeast interior during the evening and
bringing areas of light rain and isolated showers and thunderstorms, tending
scattered near the border. Hot, fresh and gusty NW'ly winds with enhanced fire
dangers are expected over the southern and central interior of the state ahead
of the trough.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
A surface and upper trough are expected to move across the southeast interior
on Tuesday, moving offshore early on Wednesday. Isolated showers, patchy light
rain and possible high-based thunderstorms are expected with the passage of the
trough system. Cloud should increase over the southwest on Thursday with the
approach of the next upper trough. Fine and mostly sunny conditions should occur
over remaining parts of the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
