Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Sep 5/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning for east coastal waters from Torres
Strait to Bowen.
A Strong Wind Warning for Gulf of Carpentaria waters north of Kowanyama.

Weather Situation
A slow moving high [1027 hPa] over the western Tasman Sea extends a firm
ridge along the east Queensland coast. The high is expected to gradually weaken
during the next couple of days and move very slowly eastwards from late today.
An upper level trough lies over the Coral Sea and across the northern tropics.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Cloudy periods with isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland
north from the Capricornia, tending to scattered showers about the North
Tropical Coast and northeast Peninsula. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere, though
some high cloud over the southwest. A cool morning in the central and southeast
interior. Fresh to strong and gusty southeasterly winds along the east coast
north of about Bowen. Light to moderate southeast to northeasterly winds
elsewhere. A Very High fire danger in most western and northern districts, as
well as the Capricornia and Central Highlands and Coalfields districts.
Forecast for Saturday
The high will continue to move only slowly eastwards over the northern Tasman
Sea while to weakening, with the ridge of high pressure along the tropical east
coast slowly relaxing. This will lead to an easing in the southeasterly trade
winds along the east coast south of about Cooktown, although strong winds are
likely to continue over coastal waters to the north. Isolated showers are likely
to continue about the coast and adjacent inland north of about Yeppoon, tending
scattered about the coast and ranges north of about Ingham and generally more
frequent about the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands. It should remain fine
and mostly sunny elsewhere, apart from some high cloud areas over the south. A
warm day in the south.
Forecast for Sunday
The high is expected to become slow-moving once more over the northern Tasman
Sea while continuing to weaken, with the ridge of high pressure along the
tropical east coast continuing to relax. This will lead to an easing in the
strong southeasterly trade winds along the east coast north of Cooktown,
although moderate to fresh southeasterly winds are likely to continue along the
tropical coast. Isolated showers should continue about the coast and adjacent
inland north of about Yeppoon, tending scattered about the coast and ranges
north of about Ingham and generally more frequent about the North Tropical Coast
and Tablelands. It should remain fine and mostly sunny elsewhere, apart from
some high cloud areas over the southeast. A very warm day in the south.
Forecast for Monday
The weak high pressure system is expected to remain slow moving over the
northern Tasman Sea, with the ridge along the tropical east coast expected to
continue weakening. Isolated showers are likely to continue about the coast and
adjacent inland north of about Yeppoon, tending scattered about the North
Tropical Coast and Tablelands in the morning. Isolated showers may also develop
about the Capricornia and Wide Bay. It should remain fine and mostly sunny
elsewhere. A very warm day in the south ahead of a trough that will approach the
southwest Queensland border overnight.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The weak high pressure system will move slowly eastwards during the outlook
period, with a weak ridge and onshore winds along the tropical east coast.
Isolated showers along the coast are therefore expected to contract to the far
northern tropics by Wednesday. A trough is expected to move across western and
southern Queensland during Tuesday before stalling near the southern Queensland
coast on Wednesday. The trough is expected to bring an increase in temperatures,
winds and fire danger; with cooler gusty west to southwesterly winds over the
southern interior in the wake of the trough. Instability and cloud is expected
to increase near the trough over southern Queensland but little or no
significant precipitation is expected. Another trough may enter the far west of
the state on Thursday.
