Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Sep 3/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for east coastal waters from
Torres Strait to Sandy Cape, and Gulf of Carpentaria waters north of
Kowanyama.

Weather Situation
A large slow moving high [1036 hPa] east of Tasmania extends a firm ridge
along the east Queensland coast. The high will move slowly to the northeast,
maintaining the ridge along the coast.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Isolated showers along the east coast and adjacent inland, tending scattered
about the North Tropical Coast, fine and mostly sunny over the remainder of the
state. Fresh southeasterly winds along the east coast, strong and gusty at times
north of Fraser Island, mostly moderate east to northeasterly winds inland. A
Very High Fire Danger over most northern and western districts.
Forecast for Thursday
The high in the Tasman Sea will shift slowly northeastwards while weakening
slightly, but will maintain the firm ridge along the Queensland east coast.
Fresh to strong southeasterly winds will continue along the east Queensland
coast and through the northeastern Gulf of Carpentaria. Isolated showers and
mild temperatures are expected over most eastern districts in the moist, onshore
wind flow, with showers remaining scattered about the North Tropical Coast. Fine
and mostly sunny conditions are expected over the remainder of the state.
Possible morning frost areas about the southern Darling Downs and Granite
Belt.
Forecast for Friday
The high pressure system will become slow-moving over the northern Tasman
Sea, with the firm ridge remaining in place along the east coast, though the
ridge will relax in the south. Isolated showers are likely along the east coast
north of Fraser Island, and an upper level trough moving northwards over the
Queensland tropics will produce some weak instability and an enhancement of the
shower activity over the North Tropical Coast and Atherton Tablelands. It should
remain fine and mostly sunny inland, although some high cloud may develop over
the southwest.
Forecast for Saturday
The high will remain slow moving while continuing to weaken, with the ridge
of high pressure along the tropical east coast slowly relaxing. This will lead
to an easing in the southeasterly trade winds along the east coast south of
about Cooktown, although strong winds are likely to continue over coastal waters
to the north. Showers should contract to north of Mackay as the onshore flow
weakens, but may remain scattered about the wet tropical coast. It should remain
fine and mostly sunny elsewhere, apart from some high cloud over the southern
inland.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The high will gradually weaken and move slowly eastwards into the far
southern Coral Sea during the outlook period, with the ridge along the east
Queensland coast will therefore gradually weakening, and strong southeasterly
winds and isolated showers contracting north over east coastal districts as a
result. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will persist over the interior of the
state under the influence of a dry and stable airmass.
