MELBOURNE - Aug 31/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time

district today, and Channel Country, North West and Northern Goldfields and
Upper Flinders for Sunday.

Cairns, and north of Cullen Point in the Northeast Gulf.

Weather Situation
A slow moving high near New Zealand will strengthen over the next couple of
days, extending a firm ridge along the east tropical Queensland coast. A surface
trough over the far south of the state will move northwards during Sunday.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Isolated light showers over the northeastern tropics. Mostly fine with a
possible shower in the southeast. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere, though cloudy
in the south of the state. Moderate to fresh northwest to northeasterly winds
inland. Moderate to fresh southeast to northeast winds elsewhere. A Severe fire
danger in the Channel Country district. Very High fire dangers in the Central
West, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and Maranoa and Warrego Districts.
Forecast for Sunday
Isolated light showers over the northeastern tropics. Isolated showers in the
southeast, extending to the southern and central interior with possible
thunderstorms in the Sunshine Coast, northern Darling Downs and Wide Bay Burnett
districts. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A hot day through western and
southern districts with moderate to fresh northwest to northeasterly winds,
gusty through the southwest of the state. Moderate to fresh southeast to
northeast winds elsewhere. A Severe fire danger in the Channel Country, North
West and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts. Very High fire
dangers in the Central West, Gulf Country, Central Highlands and Coalfields,
Maranoa and Warrego, and Peninsula districts.
Forecast for Monday
The trough will weaken over Capricornia waters while a new trough will shift
north from the Tasman Sea into the Coral Sea. This will combine with the firm
ridge to result in strong winds developing from the south through much of
southern and central Queensland waters. Strong winds should also continue over
tropical waters, including the northeastern Gulf of Carpentaria. Isolated
showers will persist about the northeastern tropics in the onshore wind flow and
are also expected near the weakening trough along the central and Capricorn
coasts. The trough shifting north into the Coral Sea should result in isolated
showers developing over the far southeast of the state during the afternoon.
Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected over the interior with
temperatures generally remaining well above the September average.
Forecast for Tuesday
The surface trough over the southern Coral Sea will shift north and weaken. A
new high is expected to move into the southern Tasman Sea and strengthen,
extending a firm ridge and fresh to strong southeasterly winds along the east
Queensland coast and through the northeastern Gulf of Carpentaria. Isolated
showers and cooler temperatures are expected over eastern districts in the
moist, onshore wind flow, with showers tending scattered about the North
Tropical Coast due to the presence of a weak upper trough. Fine and mostly sunny
conditions are expected over the remainder of the state, with temperatures
remaining generally above the September average, particularly in the
southwest.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will remain slow moving over the southern Tasman Sea, maintaining
the firm ridge and fresh to strong southeasterly winds along the east Queensland
coast and through the northeastern Gulf of Carpentaria. Isolated showers and
cooler temperatures are expected over eastern districts in the moist, onshore
wind flow, with showers remaining scattered about the North Tropical Coast. Fine
and mostly sunny conditions are expected over the remainder of the state, with
temperatures remaining generally above the September average, particularly in
the southwest.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The high in the Tasman Sea will gradually weaken throughout the outlook
period, whilst a new high will move east across the Great Australian Bight. The
ridge along the east Queensland coast will therefore gradually relax, with
strong southeasterly winds and isolated showers contracting north over east
coastal districts as a result. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will persist
over the interior of the state under the influence of a dry and stable airmass.
Minimum temperatures will cool over eastern and central districts, with possible
early light frost over the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Sunday.
