Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 30/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge over eastern Queensland. The high
will become slow moving near New Zealand over the weekend and strengthen,
maintaining a firm ridge along the east coast. A surface trough will move
eastwards across central Australia tomorrow and approach far southwestern
Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Fine and clear across most of the state with only isolated showers in the
northeast tropics. Light to moderate northwest to northeasterly winds for most
parts with moderate southeast to northeasterly winds through the northern
tropics. A Very High fire danger over the Channel Country and the Northern
Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts.
Forecast for Saturday
Fine and mostly sunny for much of the state with only isolated showers about
the northeastern tropics. Early fog patches are expected through eastern
districts. Some high cloud will move eastwards across the south of the state but
no significant rainfall is expected. Warm to hot conditions will continue
through western and southern districts in the northeast to northwesterly wind
flow ahead of the trough. Mostly moderate northwest to northeast winds, fresh
and gusty at times in the southwest. Moderate southeast winds through the
northeast tropics. A Severe fire danger in the Channel Country district and Very
High fire dangers in the Central West, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders
and Maranoa and Warrego Districts.
Forecast for Sunday
The high is expected to remain slow moving near New Zealand, maintaining the
ridge along the east coast. Fresh to strong southeasterly winds will persist
about the east tropical coast with isolated showers expected in the onshore wind
flow. A trough will move north through southeast districts during the day,
generating isolated showers with isolated thunderstorms about the Wide Bay and
Burnett district and northern parts of the Southeast Coast district. Some cloud
will persist through the southern interior though with no rainfall expected due
to a continuing dry airmass. It will be yet another warm to hot day through the
state, particularly through the southern interior. Fire dangers should not be as
enhanced as Saturday however due to lighter winds.
Forecast for Monday
The trough will move north into the southern tropics while a new high will
shift east over southeastern Australia, maintaining a firm ridge along the east
Queensland coast. Fresh southeasterly winds will extend along the east tropical
coast, strong at times north of about Cairns and through the northeastern Gulf
of Carpentaria. Isolated showers will persist about the northeastern tropics in
the onshore wind flow. Mostly fine conditions are expected elsewhere along the
east coast apart from the chance of isolated showers near Fraser Island and the
Capricorn and central coasts. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected over
the interior with temperatures generally remaining well above the September
average.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high is expected to move into the southern Tasman Sea and strengthen,
maintaining a firm ridge along the east coast of Queensland. Isolated showers
are expected along the east coast and adjacent inland, tending scattered about
the North Tropical Coast in the strengthening onshore flow. Fine and mostly
sunny over the remainder of the state. Remaining very warm over the interior but
temperatures should be close to average about the east coast in the onshore
flow.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The high in the Tasman Sea will gradually weaken through the outlook period,
whilst a new high will move east across the Great Australian Bight. Onshore
winds will persist about the east coast with isolated showers about most of the
east coast on Wednesday. Isolated showers should then contract northwards into
the central and northern east coast during Thursday and Friday. Fine and mostly
sunny over the interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
