Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 17/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high [1021 hPa] over the southern Coral Sea is expected to move slowly
eastwards, maintaining a weak ridge along the Queensland east coast. A surface
trough is expected to lie from the northwest to the Darling Downs this evening,
and then move northeast to lie from the Gulf Country to the northern Sunshine
Coast or Wide Bay during Sunday. An upper level trough is moving across New
South Wales and far southern Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Partly cloudy with isolated showers about the northeast tropical coast.
Cloudy over the southern interior and southeast inland with showers and gusty
thunderstorms. Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms over the remainder of
the southeast districts, as well as over the southern Central Highlands and
Coalfields district. Some thunderstorms may be severe, mainly in the eastern
Maranoa and Warrego district and the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district.
Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Light to moderate southeast to northeasterly
winds along the tropical coast, tending east to southeasterly and fresh at times
over Cape York Peninsula. Moderate to locally fresh northeast to northwesterly
winds elsewhere, ahead of a south to southwesterly change spreading across the
interior.
Forecast for Sunday
Partly cloudy with isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms over parts of
central Queensland and the southeast, clearing south of about Kingaroy and the
Sunshine Coast during the early morning. Mostly fine and partly cloud along the
far northeast tropical coast, only isolated light showers. Morning fogs and
cloud in the east. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A warm day in most areas,
particularly in the north and east of the state. Light to moderate southeast to
northeasterly winds near the coast north from Fraser Island, tending east to
southeasterly and fresh at times over Cape York Peninsula. Mostly light to
moderate southwest to southeasterly winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
The surface trough will remain slow moving from the Gulf Country to the
northern Sunshine Coast or Wide Bay areas and is expected to generate isolated
showers about most central districts and the Wide Bay and Burnett, ahead of a
second trough that will move rapidly across the south of the state. Isolated
showers are expected in the onshore flow about the east coast of Cape York
Peninsula. The next high should move eastwards over the Great Australian Bight,
extending a ridge across Queensland in the wake of the trough and bringing fine
and sunny conditions to remaining parts of the state. The northerly winds east
of the trough will result in yet another warm day through northern and eastern
districts. Cooler temperatures over the southern and southeast interior with
early frost patches expected.
Forecast for Tuesday
The surface trough is expected to move off the Wide Bay and central
Queensland coast early in the morning, with isolated showers clearing. Isolated
showers are expected in the onshore flow about the east coast of Cape York
Peninsula. The high is expected to move over southeastern Australia, bringing
fine and sunny conditions to the remainder of the state, with relatively cool
temperatures in the southern interior. A cool to cold morning over the
southeastern interior with early frost areas expected. Daytime temperatures will
tend towards average due to the influence of west to southwesterly winds. Some
high cloud may occur over the northwest but with no rain.
Forecast for Wednesday
Another high west of Perth is expected to extend a ridge across central
Australia and southern Queensland with fine and mostly sunny conditions across
the state. A cool to cold morning in central and southern districts with more
widespread frost areas over inland areas. Some high cloud over the tropics but
no rain at this stage. Mostly fine with only isolated light showers along the
northeast coast of Cape York Peninsula.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
A ridge of high pressure and dry southwest to southeasterly winds should
prevail across much of the state during the outlook period as the high move
slowly across Western and South Australia. A weak surface trough moving across
the state during Thursday may generate isolated showers over the eastern
tropics, before contracting to the northeast tropics from Friday. Fine
conditions are expected otherwise, with cool to cold minimum temperatures and
early frosts over the southern, central and southeastern interior.
