MELBOURNE - Aug 13/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A cold front embedded in a strong westerly airstream will rapidly cross Victoria on Wednesday. On Thursday a weak ridge of high pressure will cross the State then a stronger cold front will cross Bight waters on Friday to reach the far west of the State at night then rapidly progress eastwards over the remainder of the state on Saturday morning. A deep low pressure system will move over waters south of the Bight late on Saturday and will approach Tasmania on Sunday. Forecast for the rest of TuesdayScattered showers in the southwest becoming extensive near the coast and isolated showers possible in mountain areas but otherwise dry. The chance of thunderstorms about the southwest coast. Cool with fresh northwesterly winds strengthening in southern and elevated areas.Wednesday 14 AugustScattered showers, mainly in southern and mountain districts with snowfalls lowering to 900 metres. Local thunderstorms in the south and east, mainly in the afternoon and hail possible with showers or storms later in the day. A cool to cold mostly cloudy day with fresh to strong northwesterly winds, reaching gale force in Alpine areas and about the exposed coast and shifting west to southwesterly from the west during the day.Thursday 15 AugustIsolated showers contracting to the coast during the morning. Showers falling as snow above 900 metres in the early morning. A cool and partly cloudy day with light to moderate west to northwesterly winds, locally fresh about the ranges and coastal fringe.Friday 16 AugustFine for most of the day with northerly winds strengthening over southern and elevated areas and possibly reaching gale force in the evening. Isolated showers developing in the west late in the afternoon then extending to central areas at night and a band of rain reaching the far west late in the evening.Saturday 17 AugustA band of rain crossing central and eastern districts during the morning, then scattered showers to follow in the afternoon before mostly clearing at night. Snowfalls developing in the Alpine regions above 1200 metres. Strong to gale force northerly winds affecting most southern and mountain areas at first ahead of a northwest to westerly wind shift crossing the State rapidly in the morning with generally fresh winds to follow.
