MELBOURNE - Jul 23/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Strong Wind Warning current for the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria. Strong Wind Warning current for waters between Torres Strait and Gladstone. Strong Wind Warning issued for waters between Sandy Cape to Point Danger for later today. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A slow moving high [1034 hPa] near Adelaide extends a strengthening ridge over western and central Queensland. A weak surface trough extends from the North Tropical Coast into the central Coral Sea. This trough will slowly move north over the next two days. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Isolated showers about the east coast north of about Cooktown, and also developing about the southern offshore islands in the evening. Fine and mostly clear conditions over the remainder of the state, with early frosts over the southern inland. Strong winds over southern Gulf of Carpentaria and coastal waters between Torres Strait and St Lawrence, and also developing along the southern coast south of Sandy Cape. Moderate south to southeasterly winds, fresh along the east coast. A Very High fire danger over the Northwest, the Gulf Country and parts of the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and the Herbert and Lower Burdekin districts. Forecast for Thursday An upper ridge will provide stable conditions over Queensland, and this combined with a dry airmass should lead to fine and clear conditions over most of the state. Just a few showers are likely along the far northeast coast, and also exposed coastal regions in the south. A cool to cold morning with early frosts over the southern and central inland and also the chance of frost about the Atherton Tablelands. Strong winds are likely to continue about coastal waters between Torres Strait and Cardwell, and also the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria. Forecast for Friday The upper ridge will continue to provide stable conditions over most of Queensland, with fine and clear conditions over the inland of the state. A weak surface ridge will build along the east coast as the high moves into the Tasman Sea. Easterly winds will bring isolated showers to much of the east coast, with some showers developing over slightly further inland during the afternoon. A weak upper trough combined with a gradual increase in moisture in the onshore flow may lead to showers becoming more scattered about the tropical east coast. Early frost areas are possible over the southern interior. Strong winds are likely about coastal waters between Torres Strait and Cairns. Forecast for Saturday The upper ridge will gradually move east and continue to provide stable conditions over the interior of the state. As the high in the Tasman Sea moves east the flow will tend more onshore, continuing isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland. Scattered showers are expected about the tropical coast. Temperatures will increase in the southwest of the state as winds tend north to northeasterly ahead of an approaching surface trough over South Australia. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The upper ridge should persist over the state, with a surface ridge remaining along the east coast. This should lead to fine conditions over most of Queensland, with isolated to scattered showers along the east coast in the onshore flow. A surface trough is likely to cross the southwest of the state on Sunday and Monday before stalling and dissipating over the interior on Tuesday. Some high cloud is likely to develop over the southern inland in association with this trough, however little to no rainfall is expected. Warm temperatures are expected over the interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Wednesday.
