Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jul 22/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for southeast Gulf of
Carpentaria waters.
A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for waters between Torres Strait and
Cooktown.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A slow moving high [1027 hPa] near northern New Zealand extends a weakening
ridge across the southern Coral Sea and onto the tropical east coast of
Queensland. A surface trough lies from near Gladstone to Kowanyama, but will
weaken ahead of a more significant trough which will push off the east coast
during Tuesday morning. The next upstream high [1028 hPa] over southern Western
Australia extends a strengthening ridge across central and western Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Patchy light rain over most eastern and central districts, although rainfall
accumulations will generally be small. Isolated showers about the northeast
tropical coast. Dry and relatively cool conditions over the inland. Moderate to
fresh south to southeast winds over the tropics, generally light southwest to
southerly winds over the south. Strong winds over southern Gulf of Carpentaria
waters. A Very High fire danger over the Northwest and Gulf Country west of
Normanton.
Forecast for Tuesday
Cloudy conditions and patchy rain areas across the northern and eastern areas
of the state, contracting to the east coast during the morning and moving
offshore during the early afternoon. Cool and dry over the interior with early
frost areas over the south as the high cloud clears. Strong winds over southern
Gulf of Carpentaria and coastal waters between Torres Strait and Cooktown. A
Very High fire danger over the Northwest, the Gulf Country west of Normanton and
the southwest of the Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper trough will continue to move northeast and offshore, with the
patchy rain areas and showers clearing from the most of the east coast, although
the passage of a surface trough along the southeast coast may lead to isolated
showers along the exposed coast south of Fraser Island in the evening. Fine and
mostly clear conditions over the remainder of the state, with early frosts over
the southern inland. Strong winds over southern Gulf of Carpentaria and coastal
waters between Torres Strait and St Lawrence. A Very High fire danger over the
Northwest, the Gulf Country west of Normanton and the southwest of the
Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper trough will move offshore, with an upper ridge providing stable
conditions over Queensland, and this combined with a dry airmass should lead to
fine and clear conditions over most of the state. Just a few showers are likely
along the far northeast coast, and also exposed coastal regions in the south.
Strong winds are likely to continue about coastal waters between Torres Strait
and Mackay, and also the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria.
Forecast for Friday
An upper ridge is providing stable conditions over much of Queensland, with
fine and clear conditions over the inland of the state. A weak surface ridge
will build along the east coast as the high moves into the Tasman Sea. Easterly
winds will bring isolated showers to much of the east coast, with some showers
developing over slightly further inland during the afternoon. Early frost areas
are possible over the southern interior. Strong winds are likely about coastal
waters between Torres Strait and Bowen.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The upper ridge should persist over the state, with a surface ridge building
further along the east coast. This should lead to fine conditions over most of
Queensland, with isolated showers along parts of the east coast. Cool
southeasterly winds over the interior tending north to northeasterly and
temperatures increasing ahead of a surface trough crossing into the far
southwest during Monday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Tuesday.
