Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jul 20/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Strong Wind Warning for southeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters
for Sunday morning.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A slow moving high [1026 hPa] near New Zealand extends a weakening ridge
across the southern Coral Sea and onto the tropical east coast of Queensland. A
strong surface trough moving through central and southeast Queensland reach the
east coast south of Gladstone late today. The next upstream high to the south of
Western Australia will extend a strengthening ridge across central and western
Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Scattered showers and patchy rain areas over eastern districts south of about
Mackay. Isolated showers near the tropical east coast. Fine and mostly clear
over the west. Light to moderate south to southeast winds in the tropics,
moderate northwest to southwest winds in the south.
Forecast for Sunday
Isolated showers along the east coast north of about Yeppoon. Patchy rain
areas about the Wide Bay coast early morning. Dry, cooler and windy conditions
across most of the remainder of the state, although some high cloud will develop
over the southern inland during the day. Some light frosts in the southern
interior early morning. Moderate southeast to east winds over the tropics,
tending moderate to fresh southwest to westerly over the south. Strong winds
developing over Gulf of Carpentaria waters in the morning.
Forecast for Monday
A new upper trough is expected to develop over western Queensland and move
slowly eastwards, leading to increasing cloud from the northwest to the
southeast of the state and generating some patchy rain in the northern and
eastern Queensland. Isolated showers about the northeast in the onshore flow. A
surface ridge developing over southern inland Queensland should lead to cool and
dry conditions, although frost is not likely, due to the upper cloud. Strong
winds over southern Gulf of Carpentaria waters.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper trough will intensify and move eastwards, with cloudy conditions
and patchy rain continuing across the northern and eastern areas of the state.
Cool and dry over the interior with widespread early frost areas over the
southern interior as the high cloud clears with the passage of the upper trough.
Strong winds over southern Gulf of Carpentaria waters.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper trough is likely to become slow moving over southeast Queensland,
and combine with a trough moving up the east coast to lead to the development of
a few showers along the southeast coast and adjacent inland. Showers are also
likely to continue along the tropical east coast in the onshore flow. Fine and
mostly clear conditions over the remainder of the state, with early frosts over
the southern inland.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
Considerable uncertainty surrounds the evolution of the upper trough or low
over southeast Queensland, and this has a profound effect on the expected
weather over the southeast corner for the end of the week. The most likely
scenario is for this trough to move offshore, with a surface ridge developing
along the southern coast in its wake, leading to a few showers along the exposed
coast. However, there is a small chance that the upper low will be stronger and
less mobile, which would lead to the development of a surface low off the
southeast coast. Otherwise conditions should be fine and dry across the
remainder of the state, with east coast showers retreating to the far north.
Cool southeasterly winds over the interior with some early frost areas in
southern and central parts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Sunday.
