Weather Situation
A slow moving high [1028 hPa] near New Zealand extends a weakening ridge
along the east Queensland coast. A trough is moving through central Queensland
and will reach the east coast late Saturday. The next upstream high south of
Western Australia will extend a ridge across central and western Queensland in
the wake of the trough.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Isolated showers in eastern districts, tending scattered over the southeast.
Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the southern interior, spreading
towards the coast during the day. Isolated showers and patchy rain areas over
the central areas of the state. Light to moderate southeast to southwest winds
in the tropics, tending fresh over the northeast coast. Light to moderate
northeast to northwest winds elsewhere in the east. A cooler southwesterly
change over remaining districts, spreading to eastern districts during the
afternoon and evening.
Forecast for Sunday
Dry, cool and windy conditions in the wake of the trough across most of the
state with extensive early frost patches in the southern interior. Cloud is
expected to increase over northern parts from late Sunday ahead of a
strengthening upper trough, with some isolated showers about the northeast
Queensland coast in the moist onshore flow and rain developing over the far
north. Strong winds developing in the Gulf of Carpentaria as the next upstream
high extends a ridge into western Queensland.
Forecast for Monday
The upper trough is expected to move slowly across southern Queensland,
increasing cloud from the northwest to the southeast of the state and generating
some patchy rain in the northern and eastern areas of the state. Isolated
showers about the northeast in the onshore flow. Cool and dry over the interior
with widespread early frost areas over the southern interior. Strong winds over
the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, and extending to the Peninsula waters as the
high in the Bight moves north into central Australia.
Forecast for Tuesday
A upper trough will intensify with cloudy conditions and patchy rain
continuing across the northern and eastern areas of the state. Cool and dry over
the interior with widespread early frost areas over the southern interior.
Strong winds over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria over the east coast north of
about Cairns.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The upper trough will move off the coast on Wednesday with fine and sunny
conditions prevailing across most of the state, apart from some isolated showers
about the far northeast coast. A high pressure system will move through
southeastern Australia, leading to onshore winds along the Queensland coast and
isolated showers developing over eastern districts later in the week. Otherwise
conditions should be fine and dry across the remainder of the state. Cool
southeasterly winds over the interior with some early frost areas in southern
and central parts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Saturday.
