Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jul 19/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Nil.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A slow moving high [1032 hPa] near New Zealand extends a ridge along the east
Queensland coast. A trough is moving through western Queensland and will reach
the eastern coast late Saturday. A low pressure system near Tasmania is
weakening as it moves southeast, but this low is expected to strengthen during
Saturday as an upper trough strengthens in the area. The stronger low will
generate a cool and dry southwesterly airstream over most of Queensland into
early next week.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated showers in eastern districts, tending scattered about the North
Tropical Coast and southern Queensland coast. Rain areas and isolated
thunderstorms over the southern and central interior, mostly through the Maranoa
and Warrego district. Isolated showers and very light patchy rain through the
northwest. Mostly moderate southeast to northeast winds about the east coast,
tending northeast to northwest over the eastern interior. A cooler south to
southwesterly change over western districts.
Forecast for Saturday
Isolated showers in eastern districts. Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms
over the southern interior, spreading towards the coast during the day. Isolated
showers and patchy rain areas over the central areas of the state. Light to
moderate southeast to southwest winds in the tropics, tending fresh over the
northeast coast. Light to moderate northeast to northwest winds elsewhere in the
east. A cooler south to southwesterly change over remaining districts, spreading
to eastern districts during the afternoon and evening.
Forecast for Sunday
The surface trough and associated rain band is expected to clear eastern and
central districts early, with predominantly dry, cool and windy conditions in
its wake across most of the state and extensive early frost patches in the
southern interior. Cloud is expected to increase over northern parts from late
Sunday ahead of a strengthening upper trough, with some isolated showers about
the northeast Queensland coast in the moist onshore flow and rain developing
over the far north. Strong winds developing in the Gulf of Carpentaria and
eastern coastal waters north of about Cooktown as the next upstream high extends
a ridge into western Queensland.
Forecast for Monday
The upper trough is expected to move slowly across New South Wales and
southern Queensland, increasing cloud from the northwest to the southeast of the
state and generating some patchy rain to the tropics and central areas of the
state. Isolated showers about the northeast in the onshore flow. Cool and dry
over the interior with widespread early frost areas over southern and central
Queensland. Strong winds over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, and extending to
the Peninsula waters.
Forecast for Tuesday
A new upper trough will intensify through New South Wales and extend into
southern Queensland. Cloudy conditions continuing through the northwest to the
southeast of the state, with some patchy rain affecting the northern tropics and
central areas of the state. Isolated showers about the northeast in the onshore
flow. Cool and dry over the interior with widespread early frost areas over
southern and central Queensland. Strong winds over the southern Gulf of
Carpentaria over the east coast north of about Cardwell.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The upper trough will move over southeast Queensland on Wednesday and off the
coast early Thursday. Cloudy conditions over the northern tropics with patchy
rain will clear by early Thursday as a result. A high pressure system will mover
through southeastern Australia, leading to onshore winds along the Queensland
coast and isolated showers. Otherwise conditions should be fine and dry across
the remainder of the state. Cool southeasterly winds over the interior with some
early frost areas in the south.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
