MELBOURNE - Jul 19/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A low pressure complex south of Tasmania is expected to move northwards on Saturday to straddle Tasmania and Bass Strait. On Sunday the main low centre is expected to deepen southeast of Tasmania while a secondary low rotates northwards over western Victoria then weakens Sunday night. The main low will then drift northeastwards across the Tasman Sea on Monday and Tuesday. A large high pressure system will develop over the Bight on Monday before moving eastwards to lie just west of Victoria on Tuesday night. Forecast for the rest of FridayShowers and possible thunderstorms over the southwest, central and northeastern districts. Only isolated showers in the northwest and over East Gippsland. Snowfalls developing in Alpine areas above 1500 metres. Moderate to fresh northwesterly winds, tending westerly over western districts.Saturday 20 JulyScattered showers, more widespread about the southwest coast and northeast ranges. Local hail and thunder, mostly in the afternoon. Snowfalls lowering to 800 metres. Cold with moderate to fresh northwest to westerly winds.Sunday 21 JulyScattered showers across most districts, but only isolated showers over the northwest and far southeast. Showers more widespread at times in the southwest with possible thunderstorms. Snowfalls down to 600 metres. Cold with moderate to fresh north to northwest winds, turning westerly in the far west.Monday 22 JulyScattered showers over southern and mountain districts and isolated showers reaching the northern plains. Snowfalls down to 800 metres at first, rising to 1200 metres. Cold with light to moderate west to northwesterly winds shifting southwesterly during the day and freshening.Tuesday 23 July Scattered showers over southern and mountain districts, more extensive in the far east. Isolated showers reaching some northern areas but dry over the far northwest. Snowfalls down to 1200 metres at first, rising to 1500 metres. Moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, strong at first along the Gippsland coast but gradually easing.
