MELBOURNE - Jul 19/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of New South Wales was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A strong high pressure system near New Zealand extends a ridge into southeast Queensland, while a deep low south of Tasmania is moving steadily east. A trough associated with the low is moving over central and eastern New South Wales today, and will continue to the Tasman Sea during Saturday. This trough has generated wet and windy weather to most districts, and a cold front in it's wake will bring a significant cold outbreak over the weekend - with some areas likely to experience the coldest conditions so far this year. Development of another low pressure system to the east of Tasmania later on the weekend appears set to maintain cool temperatures across New South Wales well into next week, as the next high slowly approaches from the west. Forecast for the rest of FridayRain areas in central and northeast districts, and the chance of thunderstorms; rain more widespread along the western slopes of the ranges. The chance of showers across the southern inland, tending scattered on the western slopes of the ranges. Snow developing on the Alps above 1500 metres during the evening. Fresh to strong and gusty north to northwesterly winds, gradually turning more westerly.Saturday 20 JulyCooler. Rain areas and possible thunderstorms in the northeast, contracting to the coast then clearing later in the day. Isolated showers across the southern and central inland, tending scattered about the slopes and ranges with possible small hail. Snow showers above 1500 metres on the Alps initially, lowering to about 800 metres on the southern tablelands later in the day, and possible snow flurries about higher parts of the central tablelands in the evening. Fine and partly cloudy in the northwest, and about the central and southern coasts. Fresh to strong and gusty southwest to northwesterly winds.Sunday 21 JulyCold. Isolated showers with possible small hail over the southern inland, tending scattered about the southern slopes and tablelands, possibly extending to the south coast. Showers falling as snow above about 700 metres over the southern ranges, and 900 metres on the central ranges in the early morning. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Southwest to northwesterly winds, fresh and gusty across the south.Monday 22 JulyCold. Isolated showers over the southern inland, scattered about the southern slopes and tablelands, possibly extending to the south coast. Showers falling as snow above about 1000 metres over the southern ranges and possibly on the central ranges in the early morning. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Southwest to northwesterly winds, fresh and gusty across the south.Tuesday 23 JulyThe chance of showers about the western slopes of the southern tablelands, and along the coastal fringe south of Forster. Snow showers above 1200 metres on the southern Alps. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere.
