Weather Situation
A slow moving high [1032 hPa] near New Zealand extends a ridge along the east
Queensland coast. A trough is moving through western Queensland and will reach
the southeast coast later on Saturday. A deep low will form near Tasmania on
Sunday and move east generating a deep cold southerly airstream over Queensland
into early next week.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Showers about the east coast, isolated drizzle or showers inland over eastern
districts. Patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms in the southwest of the state
will progress east into the southern interior this afternoon. Light to moderate
SE to NE winds about the east coast, moderate NE to NW winds over the interior,
shifting cooler SW'ly further west. Moderate to fresh SE winds across the
tropics. A moderate to high fire danger over the interior.
Forecast for Saturday
The inland trough will move east and clear the southeast coast in the evening
with the patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms also contracting east. Showers
persisting in the northeast tropics and about the central coast ahead of the
trough. Becoming dry and cool over the interior with southerly winds.
Forecast for Sunday
The coastal trough moves north into the southern tropics near Cardwell with
isolated showers persisting further north. Dry and cool over the remainder of
the state. Chilly in the south with early frost through the Maranoa and Darling
Downs districts. Strong SE winds developing over southern Gulf waters in the
morning. As a secondary low starts to develop over Victoria winds will shift
more westerly over southern Queensland.
Forecast for Monday
The secondary low has weakened over Victoria but the primary low over
Tasmania will intensify turning the airstream over southern Queensland more
southerly and colder. Remaining dry and cool over most of the state but a little
patchy light rain developing in the northeast tropics associated with a new
cloud band. Chilly conditions over southern districts with more extensive early
frost. Strong SE southeast through the tropics.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The deep depression that was near Tasmania moves east and the next high over
the continent moves southeast into southern New South Wales, This will turn
winds more southeasterly over southern Queensland by Thursday with increasing
moisture near the coast. The result will be milder minima temperatures and
increasing shower development near the east coast. In the northeast tropics the
cloud band will clear on Wednesday. Over the interior remaining dry and cool.
Strong winds to continue about the northeast tropical coast but easing in the
southern Gulf.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
