Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jul 18/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Fire Weather Warning for southern parts of the Channel
Country District has been cancelled.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A slow moving high [1034 hPa] near New Zealand extends a ridge along the east
Queensland coast. The high will gradually weaken as it moves east ahead of a
cold front and strong upper trough system affecting the southwest of the state
this evening. The upper trough and cold front will continue to move east through
western and central districts during Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Cloudy conditions with isolated showers about eastern districts and the
central interior, tending scattered about the north tropical coast. Cloud
increasing across the southwest and into the southern interior with patchy rain
and isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms. Partly cloudy over the northwest
with little if any rain expected. Very High Fire Danger in southern parts of the
Channel Country District. Generally moderate SE to NE winds, tending a fresh and
gusty N to NW in the Channel Country ahead of a late SW change.
Forecast for Friday
Cloudy conditions will persist over eastern districts and the central
interior with isolated showers continuing in the onshore flow. Showers should
increase over the southeast ahead of the cold front which is expected to move
across western districts with a band of rain, showers and isolated gusty
thunderstorms contracting east, reaching the central and southeastern interior
later in the day. Moderate rainfall totals are possible over the Maranoa and
Warrego District. The next upstream high should extend a ridge over southwest
Queensland in the wake of the cold front, bringing cooler and drier conditions
to the southwest during the day. Remaining cloudy but with little if any rain
over the northwest and tropical interior. Temperatures remaining well above the
July average over most of the interior ahead of the cold front. Moderate NE to
SE winds in the tropics. Winds tending a moderate to fresh NE to NW in southern
parts ahead of a W to SW change moving through western and central districts
during the day.
Forecast for Saturday
The strengthening upper trough should move slowly across New South Wales and
southern Queensland. The cold front and associated band of rain, showers and
isolated thunderstorms are expected to move across eastern districts and
contract off the far southern coast late in the evening. Moderate rainfall
totals are possible over the southern Darling Downs and Granite Belt District. A
weak ridge should persist over the tropics with isolated showers expected over
the eastern tropics, more likely about the coast, in the weakening onshore flow.
The cooler and drier airmass in the wake of the cold front should extend into
the northwest and parts of the southern interior. Temperatures remaining well
above the July average ahead of the cold front.
Forecast for Sunday
The cold front and associated rain band is expected to clear central eastern
districts early on Sunday morning with predominantly dry, cool and windy
conditions in its wake across most of the state and extensive early frost
patches in the southern interior. Cloud is expected to increase over northern
parts from late Sunday ahead of the next strengthening upper trough, with some
isolated showers about the northeast Queensland coast in the moist onshore flow.
Strong winds developing in the Gulf of Carpentaria during the morning as the
next upstream high extends a ridge into western Queensland.
Forecast for Monday
The upper trough is expected to move slowly across Queensland during Monday,
generating cloudy conditions across northern and eastern districts, though
producing little if any rain. Isolated showers continuing in the onshore flow
about the northeast Queensland coast. Otherwise conditions should be fine and
dry across the remainder of the state. Colder temperatures and south to
southwesterly winds are expected across much of Queensland, with widespread
early frost areas over southern and central interior. Strong winds persisting in
the Gulf of Carpentaria and possibly developing over eastern waters north of
about Cooktown as the next upstream high moves north into central Australia.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The upper trough is expected continue moving east across Queensland during
Tuesday, maintaining cloudy conditions across northern and eastern districts,
though generating little if any rain before moving offshore during Wednesday.
Isolated showers continuing in the onshore flow about the northeast Queensland
coast. A low level trough may brush the southeast coast on Wednesday or
Thursday, possibly generating some showers about the exposed southern coast and
islands. Otherwise conditions should be fine and dry across the remainder of the
state. Colder temperatures and south to southwesterly winds are expected across
much of Queensland, with widespread early frost areas over southern and central
Queensland.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
