Australia -- New South Wales Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jul 17/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of New South Wales was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A strong, slow-moving high pressure system over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge into northeastern New South Wales, while a low pressure trough over central parts of the state weakens. A trough extending across South Australia will deepen and move steadily east during the next few days, with an associated cold front expected to reach the state's western border during Thursday, continuing to the coast by early Saturday. This system is forecast to bring a significant cold outbreak to the region.
Forecast for the rest of WednesdayIsolated showers possible over the eastern half of the state, mainly expected over the ranges and plains as well as over the Northern Rivers. Showers tending scattered over the southern slopes and ranges. Isolated thunderstorms possible over Northern Rivers, Illawarra, southern parts of Central Tablelands and northern parts of Southern Tablelands. Partly cloudy elsewhere. Northeast to northwest winds.Thursday 18 JulyRain areas, and isolated squally thunderstorms, developing in the western inland extending to the southern inland later. Thunderstorms could become severe in the afternoon in the west. Isolated showers over the southern slopes and ranges, and along the north coast. Partly cloudy elsewhere. North to northwesterly winds, becoming fresh to strong and gusty in the west and south.Friday 19 JulyAreas of rain in central and eastern parts, most widespread along the western slopes of the ranges, falling as snow on the Alps above 1500 metres by the end of the day. Isolated showers elsewhere. Isolated thunderstorms possible across the entire state, except the far west and far northeast. Fresh to strong and gusty north to northwesterly winds, turning more westerly later.Saturday 20 JulyIsolated showers over the eastern half of the state, tending scattered over the slopes and ranges and falling as snow above 800 metres by the end of the day. Isolated thunderstorms possible over the far northeast and far southern parts of the state. Fine across the western inland. Fresh to strong and gusty southwest to northwesterly winds.Sunday 21 JulyIsolated showers over the eastern half of the state, mainly about the slopes and plains. Showers tending scattered over the southern slopes and ranges. Showers falling as snow above about 700m. Fine acroos the western inland. Fresh to strong and gusty southwest to northwesterly winds.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EST Thursday.Product IDN10031
