MELBOURNE - Jul 11/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for east coastal waters between Torres Strait and St Lawrence. A Strong Wind Warning is current for Gulf of Carpentaria waters north of Kowanyama. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A slow moving high [1036 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. The high will remain slow moving and gradually weaken over the next few days. Forecast for the rest of Friday Partly cloudy with isolated showers over eastern Queensland, tending scattered near the southern Queensland coast and also about the North Tropical Coast. Fine and mostly sunny in the west, with warm NE'ly winds maintaining temperatures well above the July average. Strong and gusty SE'ly winds over the tropics, but these will ease over the far southern tropics. Winds remaining moderate to fresh SE to NE'ly elsewhere. A Very High fire danger in the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders district. Forecast for Saturday The high will remain slow moving over the southern Tasman Sea as an upper trough amplifies over Western Australia. The continuing moist onshore flow will maintain partly cloudy with isolated showers over eastern Queensland. Showers will tend scattered near the Fraser coast and also about the North Tropical Coast. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will prevail in the west, with warm NE'ly winds continuing to maintain temperatures well above the July average. Strong and gusty SE'ly winds will tend to contract to the northern tropics during the day but remain moderate to fresh SE to NE'ly elsewhere. High cloud will develop in the far southwest during the day due to an approaching upper trough. Forecast for Sunday The high is expected to remain over the southern Tasman Sea while the upper trough will move towards western Queensland. Isolated showers over eastern Queensland will tend scattered about the North Tropical Coast. It will remain fine and mostly sunny in the northwest, with warm NE'ly winds continuing to maintain temperatures well above the July average. Over the southwest and southern interior, the upper level trough is expected to increase middle and high level cloud with patchy light rain and isolated showers expected to spread over these areas. Strong and gusty SE'ly winds will continue across the far northern tropics with generally moderate to fresh SE to NE'ly winds elsewhere. Forecast for Monday The high will slowly move east over the Tasman Sea and continue to extend a moist onshore flow with isolated showers over eastern districts. Showers will tend scattered about the North Tropical Coast and Central Coast. The upper trough will move into southwestern Queensland with cloud and patchy rain extending east during the day. With increasing instability in the far southwest of the state there will be a possibility of isolated thunderstorms in this area. It will remain fine and partly cloudy about the northwest of the state with temperatures remaining well above the July average. Strong and gusty SE'ly winds will continue across the far northern tropics with generally moderate to fresh SE to NE'ly winds elsewhere. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The high is expected to move slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea towards New Zealand maintaining the firm ridge along most of the east Queensland coast during the outlook period. This is expected to maintain mostly cloudy conditions with isolated to scattered showers over eastern Queensland. The upper trough will move over the east on Tuesday and Wednesday leading to enhanced instability with more widespread showers over eastern parts south of the tropics. A second upper trough will moves across the south of the state on Thursday leading to a band of showers and rain with possible local thunder to southern districts. Generally moderate to fresh SE to NE'ly winds across the state, with stronger E to SE'ly winds across the far northern tropics. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Friday.
