Weather Situation
A slow moving high [1036 hPa] is located over the Tasman Sea and extends a
firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. A weak upper level trough is moving
across southeastern Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Mostly cloudy with scattered showers and areas of drizzle over the southeast.
Partly cloudy with isolated showers and areas of drizzle over remaining eastern
districts, tending scattered about the North Tropical Coast as well as about the
Central Coast and Whitsundays in the morning. Fine, partly cloudy and warm in
the west. Some morning fogs in the south and east. Moderate to fresh SE to NE
winds across most of the state, strong and gusty at times along the tropical
coast and across the northern tropics. A Very High fire danger in the Northern
Goldfields and Upper Flinders district.
Forecast for Friday
The high is expected to remain over the Tasman Sea but should gradually
weaken during the day, with strong and gusty SE'ly winds tending to ease over
the far southern tropics but remaining moderate to fresh SE to NE'ly elsewhere.
Partly cloudy with isolated showers and/or areas of drizzle over eastern
Queensland, tending scattered near the southern Queensland coast and also about
the North Tropical Coast. Fine and partly cloudy in the west, with warm NE'ly
winds maintaining temperatures well above the July average. Maximum temperatures
near or below average in the east.
Forecast for Saturday
The high is expected to be located over the southern Tasman Sea, with strong
and gusty SE'ly winds tending to contract to the northern tropics during the day
but remaining moderate to fresh SE to NE'ly elsewhere. Partly cloudy with
isolated showers and/or areas of drizzle over eastern Queensland, tending
scattered near the southern Queensland coast and also about the North Tropical
Coast. Fine and mostly sunny in the west, with warm NE'ly winds continuing to
maintain temperatures well above the July average. High cloud developing in the
far southwest during the day. Maximum temperatures near or below average in the
east.
Forecast for Sunday
The high is expected to remain over the southern Tasman Sea, with strong and
gusty SE'ly winds across the far northern tropics and generally moderate to
fresh SE to NE'ly winds elsewhere. Cloudy with isolated showers and/or areas of
drizzle over eastern Queensland, tending scattered about the North Tropical
Coast. Remaining fine and mostly sunny in the northwest, with warm NE'ly winds
continuing to maintain temperatures well above the July average. Over the
southwest and southern interior, an upper level trough is expected to increase
middle and high level cloud with patchy light rain and isolated showers expected
to spread over these areas. Maximum temperatures near or below average in the
east.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The high is expected to move slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea towards
New Zealand and strengthen once again, maintaining the firm ridge along most of
the east Queensland coast during the outlook period. This is expected to
maintain mostly cloudy conditions with isolated to scattered showers over
eastern Queensland and further inland assisted by increasing instability
produced by the upper trough moving slowly east over the state. The upper trough
will trigger areas of rain and possible local thunder in the southwest, although
mostly light. Generally moderate to fresh SE to NE'ly winds across the state,
with stronger E to SE'ly winds across the far northern tropics. A surface trough
is expected over the southwest of the state on Monday, before weakening on
Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to remain above the July average in the west,
but near or below average during the daytime elsewhere.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
