Weather Situation
A near stationary surface trough lies through the tropical and central
interior of the state. A slow moving high [1031 hPa] over southeastern Australia
is expected to strengthen on Monday, extending a firm ridge along the east
Queensland coast. An upper level trough will approach the southwestern corner of
the state late Monday.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Cloudy over the northeastern tropics with isolated to scattered showers [more
frequent near the coast] and morning drizzle areas. Partly cloudy though mostly
fine over remaining eastern districts, with just the chance of isolated light
showers north of Brisbane. Partly cloudy over the central interior though
remaining fine. Moderate S to SE winds in the west, fresh and gusty at times.
Fresh SE'ly winds over the east tropical coast, strong and gusty north of about
Cairns. Light to moderate mostly SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
Mostly cloudy over the northeastern tropics with isolated to scattered
showers, more frequent near the coast. Partly cloudy over remaining eastern
districts though with just the chance of isolated light showers north of about
Brisbane. A cool morning with early frost patches over the Maranoa and Warrego
and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. High cloud increasing in the far
southwest late in the day with some patchy light rain developing. Fine and
partly cloudy over remaining western parts. A Very High fire danger over the
North West, Channel Country and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders
districts. Strong and gusty SE'ly winds over the east tropical coast. Moderate
to fresh and gusty S to SE winds over the remaining east coast and through
western Queensland. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high will move into the Tasman Sea by late in the day, maintaining a firm
ridge and fresh to strong S to SE'ly winds along the east coast and through the
Gulf of Carpentaria. Isolated showers will occur over eastern districts in the
onshore wind flow, more frequent along the northeast tropical coast. Cloud will
increase from the west through the southern interior ahead of the weak upper
level trough, with patchy light rain expected over the Channel Country district.
Early frost patches are expected through the Maranoa and Warrego and Darling
Downs and Granite Belt districts.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will move slowly southeast through the Tasman Sea, maintaining a
firm ridge and fresh to strong SE'ly winds over the east coast and through the
northeastern Gulf of Carpentaria. The upper trough will weaken as it moves east
over southern Queensland, extending patchy high cloud east with its passage.
Little if any rain is expected with this cloud over the southern interior. The
moist E to SE'ly wind flow through eastern districts will result in isolated
showers, more frequent along the northeast tropical coast and southeast coast.
Forecast for Thursday
The high will remain slow moving over the Tasman Sea, maintaining a firm
ridge and fresh to strong and gusty SE'ly winds along the east Queensland coast.
Isolated showers will continue over eastern districts in the moist onshore wind
flow, scattered about the exposed coast. Some cloud will persist through the
southern interior of the state though with little to no rainfall expected. Fine
and mostly sunny conditions will continue in the northwest. A warm NE'ly wind
flow will most likely result in maximum temperatures about 5 degrees above the
July average in western Queensland.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The high will most likely remain slow moving over the Tasman Sea though
should weaken during the outlook period, with strong SE'ly winds gradually
contracting to far northern tropical waters. Isolated showers will continue over
eastern districts in the moist onshore wind flow, more frequent about the
exposed coast. High cloud is expected to increase through the southern interior
again from Saturday associated with the passage of an upper level trough. Some
patchy light rain is expected with this cloud. N to NE'ly winds should maintain
warm conditions over western districts during the outlook period.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Monday.
