Weather Situation
A near stationary surface trough lies through the tropical and central
interior of the state. Another weak trough is expected to contract off the
southern Queensland coast late tonight or early Sunday. A high will enter
southeastern Australia during Sunday and gradually extend a firm ridge along
much of the east Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Cloudy over the far northern and eastern tropics with isolated showers and
drizzle areas. Areas of cloud over the central interior though remaining fine.
Areas of fog developing near the Central, Capricorn and Wide Bay coasts. Fine
and mostly clear elsewhere. Light to moderate S to SE winds in the west.
Moderate to fresh and gusty SE'ly winds over the east tropical coast, becoming
strong about the coast between Cape Grenville and Cooktown late this evening.
Light to moderate mostly SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Sunday
Cloudy over the northeastern tropics with isolated to scattered showers [more
frequent near the coast] and morning drizzle areas. Morning fog patches over
remaining eastern districts, clearing to a mostly fine day with just the chance
of isolated light showers north of Brisbane. Partly cloudy over the central
interior though remaining fine. Possible early frost patches over the far
southern interior. A warm day over the tropical and central interior. Moderate S
to SE winds in the west, fresh and gusty at times. Fresh SE'ly winds over the
east tropical coast, strong and gusty north of about Cairns. Light to moderate
mostly SE to NE winds elsewhere. A Very High fire danger over the North West
district and parts of the Channel Country district.
Forecast for Monday
A large high will move into southeastern Australia and extend a firm ridge
along the east Queensland coast, with strong SE'ly winds between Torres Strait
and Bowen and extending south to about Yeppoon during the day. Strong SE'ly
winds will also develop through northeastern Gulf of Carpentaria waters.
Isolated showers will occur over the northeast tropics in the moist onshore wind
flow, more frequent near the coast. Partly cloudy conditions are expected over
remaining eastern districts though with just the chance of isolated light
showers north of about Brisbane. Early frost patches are expected over the
Maranoa and Warrego and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. Fine
conditions will persist in the west though high cloud will increase late in the
day.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high will move into the Tasman Sea by late in the day, maintaining a firm
ridge and fresh to strong S to SE'ly winds along the east coast and through the
Gulf of Carpentaria. Isolated showers will occur over eastern districts in the
onshore wind flow, more frequent along the northeast tropical coast. Cloud will
increase from the west through the southern interior ahead of a weak upper level
trough, with patchy light rain developing over the Channel Country district
during the day. Early frost patches are expected through the Maranoa and Warrego
and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will move slowly southeast through the Tasman Sea, maintaining a
firm ridge and fresh to strong SE'ly winds over the east coast and through the
northeastern the Gulf of Carpentaria. The upper trough will weaken as it moves
east over southern Queensland, extending patchy high cloud east with its
passage. Some light rain is expected with this cloud over the southern interior.
The moist E to SE'ly wind flow through eastern districts will result in isolated
showers, more frequent along the northeast tropical coast and southeast coast.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The high is expected to remain slow moving over the Tasman Sea, while another
high centre will most likely develop over southeastern Australia late Friday. A
firm ridge and strong SE'ly winds will therefore persist over the east tropical
Queensland coast during the outlook period. Isolated showers will continue over
eastern districts in the moist onshore wind flow, more frequent about the
exposed coast. Cloud is expected to decrease over the southern interior on
Thursday, though should increase in the southwest again on Saturday ahead of a
new upper trough moving east over Central Australia.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Sunday.
