tropical coast north of Cooktown for Saturday evening.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A trough is moving across southern Queensland and is expected to reach the
southeast coast this evening. This trough will then move north through the Wide
Bay coast on Saturday and stall in the Capricorn zone late in the day. A ridge
of higher pressure will develop across northern New South Wales during the
weekend.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated showers about most of the east coast, very isolated showers over
inland eastern districts this afternoon or evening. Fine further west with light
to moderate southwest to southeast winds. Light to moderate northeast to
northwest winds towards eastern districts. Moderate to fresh southeast winds
over the tropics.
Forecast for Saturday
The ridge of higher pressure will form across northern New South Wales as the
coastal trough moves north through the Wide Bay District and eventually stall in
the Capricorn zone. Inland the trough also stalls over the central interior.
Showers persist about the east coast but develop further in the Wide Bay Burnett
region south of the trough. Extensive early fog areas over eastern districts and
possible frost in the Granite Belt district. Fine over the interior, dry in the
west. Fine also for the southeast region. Freshening southeast winds to strong
wind force on the northeast tropical coast. Moderate to fresh southeast winds
generally over the tropics, light to moderate southwest to southeast winds over
the interior. Light to moderate southeast to northeast winds about the east
coast. A high to very high fire danger in the west of the state.
Forecast for Sunday
Much the same pattern as Saturday with showers about most of the east coast.
Isolated showers extending inland to the central west from the Wide Bay
district. Fine over the remainder of the state. Strong winds extending further
south along the northeast tropical coast. Once again extensive early fog areas
over eastern districts. Possible early frost in the Granite Belt.
Forecast for Monday
The next high cell intensifies and moves southeast into southern New South
Wales. This generates stronger southeasterly winds along the Queensland east
coast with strong winds south to about St Lawrence. Strong winds also developing
over into the northern Gulf waters. Showers continuing about the east coast,
more extensive over the southeast region. Some early frost in the Granite Belt.
Fine and sunny further west.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high cell moves off the southern New South Wales coast but continues to
intensify. Strong southeast winds continue to blow along the Queensland coast
north of St Lawrence and over northern Gulf waters. Showers again about the
east coast. Fine over the interior apart from patchy light rain developing in
the southwest of the state late in the day. Early frost developing near Roma and
over the Granite Belt.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
As the high cell moves further southeast winds will actually weaken about the
east coast of Queensland with strong winds contracting north to about Cardwell.
The patchy rain sinks into New South Wales and does not reach the east coast of
Queensland. Showers continue about the east coast and associated inland
districts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
