Sorghum Area Up 16%

WASHINGTON - Jun 28/13 - SNS -- Area planted to sorghum in 2013 is estimated at 7.20 million acres, up 15% from last year, according to the USDA seeded area estimates for 2013.

Kansas and Texas are the leading sorghum States and account for 76% of the United States acreage. Growers expect to harvest 6.09 million acres for grain, up 23% from last year.

As of June 23, 92% of the crop had been planted, 2 percentage points behind last year but 2 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Fifty-four% of the crop was rated in good to excellent condition on June 23, compared with 44% at the same time last year.
