MELBOURNE - Jun 20/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong Wind Warning has been issued for southern Gulf waters for Friday morning. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1028 hPa] south of Tasmania extends a ridge into Queensland. A low near New Zealand is gradually drifting eastwards and will be located well to the east of New Zealand by late Thursday. An upper level trough is approaching Queensland from the west. Forecast for the rest of Thursday High cloud covers most of the state with patchy light rain developing in the northwest and extending southeast. Some isolated showers are occurring about the north tropical coast and offshore from the southeast coast. Showers are expected to increase in the Wide Bay region this evening and will extend inland as light rain overnight into the Darling Downs district. Light to moderate southeast winds about most of the east coast tending moderate to fresh across the tropics. Light to moderate southeast over the interior. Forecast for Friday Patchy rain extending from the northwest to the southern interior, contracting to the east coast by the evening. Isolated showers to follow over the Darling Downs in the late afternoon. Isolated showers persisting about the northeast tropical coast. A southerly change will progress from the west during the day behind the rain band. Strong southeast winds developing the in the southern Gulf in the morning. Becoming dry and cool over the interior after the passage of the rain band. Forecast for Saturday The upper level trough will have cleared the east coast overnight Friday with clearing rain. The surface trough or wind change will have also cleared the southeast coast and move north along the central coast. Isolated showers remaining in the northeast tropics. Generally cooler over southern districts with extensive early frost over the southern and southeast interior. Frost areas will also extend north into the central interior and west to about Quilpie. A little drizzle or showers may occur near the southern border of the Darling Downs due to cloud build up from New South Wales. Forecast for Sunday The ridge of higher pressure remains over western Queensland from a high centre near Tasmania. A trough will form off the New South Wales coast and develop into the central coast during the day. For Queensland little change in the overall weather. Generally dry and cool with isolated showers remaining in the northeast tropics and a little drizzle or showers near the southern border. Once again extensive early frost over many southern districts including the central interior. Forecast for Monday A low now forms on the trough on the central New South Wales coast and increases the southwest wind flow into southern Queensland. Winds also increase to strong wind force on the northeast tropical coast. Weather elements do not change much for Queensland with isolated showers persisting on the northeast tropical coast. Some isolated showers or drizzle over the southern Darling Downs. Dry and cool over the remainder of the state with extensive early frost over the southern and central interior. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Showers increasing off the southeast coast in the southerly flow through to Thursday. Higher level cloud streaks across western districts with patchy rain on Tuesday, contracting to the central coast on Wednesday. Increasing instability over the Darling Downs on Thursday will lead to isolated showers developing. Strong southeast winds continuing about the northeast tropical coast. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
