MELBOURNE - Jun 17/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong wind warning has been issued for Tuesday morning for the southeast waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high south of Tasmania extends a ridge of high pressure across Central Australia. A low is drifting gradually eastwards across the Tasman Sea. The two systems are combining to push dry and cool S to SW winds across most of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Monday Fine and mostly sunny across the state except for some patchy rain areas and possible isolated thunderstorms over the northern reaches of Cape York Peninsula. Light to moderate southwest to southeast winds, fresh at times along the northern coast. Forecast for Tuesday Fine and mostly sunny across most of the state except for some patchy rain areas over the northern parts of the Peninsula district. Widespread areas of early frost over the southern and southeast interior, and also about parts of the central interior. Light to moderate southwest to southeast winds, fresh at times along the northern coast. Forecast for Wednesday The ridge will persist over much of Queensland while the low pressure system in the Tasman Sea should deepen as it moves eastwards. Both weather systems will cause winds to freshen and swells to rise about the exposed parts of the southeast coast. Remaining fine and mostly sunny across most of Queensland except for some showers and patchy rain about the Peninsula district. Widespread areas of early frost over the southern and southeast interior, and also about parts of the central interior. Forecast for Thursday The ridge will persist over much of Queensland but weaken as a new low pressure system moves into the Great Australian Bight. An upper trough approaching western Queensland should extend a cloud band over the northern tropics though little or no rain is expected to fall out of it, except over the northern reaches of Cape York Peninsula where patchy rain areas should occur. Isolated showers developing about the exposed coast in the southeast, with swell still affecting the coastal areas. Areas of early frost over the southeast and central interior. Forecast for Friday The low pressure system will move slowly east into southeastern Australia and will weaken the ridge across the state. The upper level trough will extend a cloud and rain band across eastern and northern districts. Fine conditions will prevail in most western districts as a southwesterly airstream continues to advect dry air into this part of the state. Increasing cloud cover and low level moisture will contract the risk of frost to the Granite Belt. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The upper trough will move east and take the cloud and rain band off the east coast early on Saturday. Dry southwest to southeast winds will bring fine and mostly sunny conditions to large parts of the state as the low pressure system moves into the Tasman Sea. Isolated showers are likely to persist over the Peninsula district and the northern tropical coast in a moist onshore flow. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
