MELBOURNE - Jun 12/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for offshore coastal waters between Cape Moreton and Point Danger. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for southeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters for Friday. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure system [1023 hPa] over the Tasman Sea is moving slowly east with a weakening ridge over eastern Queensland and a generally moist SE to NE airflow. An upper trough moving east over New South Wales and southern Queensland is expected to weaken during Thursday. A low [1008 hPa] over southeast Australia is expected to move slowly east across New South Wales during today and Thursday, with the associated surface trough also moving across southern Queensland. The surface trough will lie from the Gulf Country to the southeast of the state by Thursday morning and contract off the southeast coast by late Thursday. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Cloudy with rain areas and gusty thunderstorms over the southern and southeast interior, contracting eastwards during the evening. Cloudy with light showers or drizzle in the far southwest. Cloudy with showers, areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms over central and southeast districts. Moderate falls developing in southeast districts. Cloudy with isolated to scattered showers over the eastern tropics. Fine and mostly clear over the northwest. Moderate NE to NW winds in the southeast, freshening in the afternoon and evening. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds along the tropical coast, shifting moderate SE to NE elsewhere ahead of a cooler and gusty W to SW change spreading across the west and southern interior. Forecast for Thursday Morning rain areas with isolated thunderstorm should clear off the southeast coast during the morning. Isolated showers should develop in its wake about the southeast and persist about remaining eastern districts. Cloudy conditions are also expected over the southern and southeast Queensland interior with morning drizzle areas and isolated afternoon and evening showers. Cooler moderate SW to SE winds across the Queensland interior as a low pressure system intensifies over the southwest Tasman Sea. Strong south to southeasterly winds over southern Gulf of Carpentaria waters, easing in the afternoon. Forecast for Friday The low pressure system over the southwest Tasman Sea is expected to continue deepening. A high over the Southern Ocean is expected to extend a ridge over most of Queensland and will combine with the low to produce cool to cold and gusty SW to SE winds over most of the state, but with mostly fine conditions expected. Another upper trough will move over southern Queensland. Lingering cloud over parts of the southern and southeast interior with morning drizzle and light afternoon and evening showers. Isolated early frosts are possible in the southeast interior, mainly about the Granite Belt. Isolated showers are expected to persist over the far northeast tropics in an onshore airflow. Strong south to southeasterly winds over southern Gulf of carpentaria waters, easing in the afternoon. Forecast for Saturday The low pressure system over the southwest Tasman Sea is expected to move slowly east. The high over the Southern Ocean is expected to continue extending a ridge over most of Queensland. The combination of these two systems will continue to bring a cool to cold SW to SE airflow to most of Queensland with predominantly fine conditions. Cloudy areas with morning drizzle and light afternoon and evening showers are likely once again over parts of the southern and southeast interior. Some early frosts are possible in parts of the southeast interior. Isolated showers over the far northern tropics associated with an onshore airflow. High cloud is expected to increase over the west and southern interior due to another upper trough over the west of the continent but with no rain. Strong south to southeasterly winds over southern Gulf of Carpentaria waters in the morning. Forecast for Sunday The low over the southwest Tasman Sea should continue to deepen and remain slow moving whilst a ridge will extend across much of Queensland. These two system will continue to combine to bring a cool SW to SE airflow across most of the state with mostly fine conditions. Cloud may thicken across the far northeast of the state due to an approaching upper trough, leading to showers and patchy rain areas. Areas of high cloud will drift across the south of the state but no rainfall is expected. Some early frosts are again possible about parts of the southern and southeast interior. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The low pressure system over the Tasman Sea is expected to remain slow moving through the outlook period. Meanwhile, a high over the Southern Ocean is expected to continue extending a ridge over most of Queensland with a generally cool to cold S to SE airflow over most of Queensland with predominantly fine conditions. Areas of high cloud will continue to spread across southern Queensland but with little if any rain due to the dry low level airflow, clearing by Tuesday. Areas of early frost are otherwise expected in the southern interior and southeast inland. Generally cloudy with isolated showers expected to persist over the northeast tropics, which may tend to patchy rain at times on Monday due to the passage of the upper trough over southern Queensland. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Thursday.
