Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jun 8/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for northeast Gulf of
Carpentaria waters, north of Crab Island.
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait and
Gladstone.
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Noosa Heads and
Point Danger.

Weather Situation
A high pressure system [1030 hPa] over southeast Australia is expected to
move eastwards into the Tasman Sea this evening and remain over the Tasman Sea
on Sunday. The high is expected to strengthen the ridge over eastern Queensland.
A trough and southeasterly change over southeast Queensland is expected to move
only very slowly northwards on Sunday with widespread showers expected. A weak
upper level trough is moving over southern Queensland, while a stronger upper
trough located over central Australia is expected to move into far western
Queensland late Sunday night.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Cloudy with scattered showers and drizzle areas over the Southeast Coast
district. Cloudy with isolated showers and drizzle areas over remaining eastern
districts, tending scattered about the North Tropical Coast tonight. Cloudy over
parts of western Queensland and the southern interior but with little or no
rain. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh
to strong about parts of the east coast.
Forecast for Sunday
Cloudy with widespread showers over the Southeast Coast and southern Wide Bay
and Burnett districts, tending to rain at times with moderate falls about the
coast and nearby ranges. Cloudy with isolated showers and areas of drizzle over
the remaining eastern half of Queensland, tending scattered about the North
Tropical Coast, Central Coast and Whitsundays districts. Cloudy with patchy rain
over the southwest and southern interior, increasing near the southern areas
during the afternoon and evening. Cloudy but with little if any rain over the
northwest. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh to strong about parts of the
east coast.
Forecast for Monday
The high is likely to remain over the Tasman Sea and should maintain an
onshore flow with cloudy conditions and showers and drizzle areas across the
eastern half of Queensland. The upper trough is expected to move across southern
Queensland and will extend thickening cloud with scattered showers, areas of
rain and isolated thunderstorms across the southern interior and southeast
districts, contracting into southeastern Queensland in the evening. There is the
possibility of moderate falls in parts of southeast Queensland as the upper
trough approaches this area late in the day and combined with decaying surface
trough near the Sunshine Coast. Partly cloudy over the west but with little or
no rain, clearing southeast during the day. Fine and mostly sunny over the
northwest. Cool day time temperatures in the southeast. Winds remaining moderate
to fresh E to SE'ly along most of the tropical coast, strong at times over the
far north.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high should weaken over the Tasman Sea and as a result the onshore flow
should generally weaken along the east Queensland coast. The upper trough is
expected to have moved offshore but a new, stronger trough system will develop
over South Australia during the day. Generally cloudy conditions are expected to
persist over the east of the state with isolated showers and areas of drizzle,
tending scattered about the Southeast and North Tropical Coasts. Isolated
showers are also likely to spread into the southwest during the afternoon and
evening ahead of the intensifying upper trough over South Australia and a new
cloud and rain band that is expected to move into the far southwest late in the
evening. Fine and mostly sunny in the northwest.
Forecast for Wednesday
The strong upper trough and accompanying surface trough is expected to move
into the west of the state and extend thickening cloud over the southwest and
central interior with showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms. Further
east, the trough system is expected to combine with an inflow of humid air to
produce more widespread showers, areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms across
the southern interior and over southeast districts, with relatively higher
rainfalls expected; though there is some uncertainty associated with this
scenario. Remaining cloudy with isolated showers over the eastern tropics and
tropical interior, tending scattered about the North Tropical and central
Queensland coasts. Cool day time temperatures under the thick cloud in the
south.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The strong upper level trough is expected to move across the southern
Queensland interior during Thursday and then slowly off the east coast by early
Saturday. Cloudy with areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms ahead of the
trough contracting into central and southeast districts during Thursday, and
then offshore by early Friday. The surface trough is expected to have moved into
far eastern Queensland by Thursday night and offshore early Friday with colder,
fresh and gusty W to SW winds developing in its wake across most of Queensland
as a low intensifies near the central New South Wales coast. Cloudy and cold
conditions with isolated showers and areas of drizzle are expected to persist
over the southern and southeast interior in the wake of the rain band until
Saturday morning. Isolated showers over the eastern tropics are expected to
contract to the far north during Friday and Saturday.
