MELBOURNE - Jun 7/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters between Torres Strait and Cardwell. A Strong Wind Warning is current for northeast Gulf waters north of Crab Island. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for waters between Cardwell and Gladstone for Saturday. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure system near New Zealand extends a ridge along the Queensland east coast. A new high pressure system in the Great Australian Bight will move eastwards over the weekend and into the Tasman Sea, strengthening the ridge through Queensland. An upper level trough lies over Central Australia. Forecast for the rest of Friday Isolated showers over eastern districts in northern and central Queensland. Cloudy over southern Queensland with little if any rain in the southwest. Fine and partly cloudy elsewhere. Light to moderate SW to SE winds, tending fresh to strong along the central and northern coasts. Forecast for Saturday Isolated showers over eastern districts. Some early drizzle areas across the eastern interior. Cloudy over the southern interior with little if any rain. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Light to moderate mostly SE winds, tending fresh to strong along the central and northern coasts. A Very High Fire Danger in the North West. Forecast for Sunday The high should drift eastwards across the Tasman Sea while maintaining fresh to strong SE winds along Queensland's east coast and isolated to scattered showers over eastern districts. The high should inject moisture into the central interior assisting in the development of afternoon showers. A relatively moist low level flow should combine with a weak surface trough to produce some isolated showers over the southern and western interior. A new cloud band should develop across the western interior though little or no rainfall is expected, while the northern interior should remain fine and clear. Forecast for Monday The high should remain over the Tasman Sea and is likely to maintain an onshore flow and at least isolated showers across Queensland's eastern districts. The cloud band should thicken helping to produce patchy rain and showers over central and southeastern parts. An upper level trough moving over the southern interior should help to trigger showers and isolated thunderstorms, with the greatest chance of storms in the southern border areas. Fine and mostly sunny over the western and northern interior. Forecast for Tuesday The high will weaken over the Tasman Sea as a low pressure system moves into the Great Australian Bight. The onshore flow will weaken along the coast, but still push showers into eastern districts. The cloud band will push off the southern coast, but expect scattered showers and areas of drizzle through southeast areas. A new band of cloud and rain will enter the southwest of the state during the afternoon and evening. An upper level trough over central Australia may lead to isolated thunderstorms over the southern interior. Fine and mostly sunny in the northwest. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The low pressure system will push eastwards through southeastern Australia and into the Tasman Sea by Friday. The upper level trough will move through southern Queensland, with showers and areas of rain over southern Queensland, contracting east and pushing off the coast by early Friday. Isolated showers in the tropical east. Fine over the northern interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Saturday.
