Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between
Torres Strait and Cooktown.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A large high [1033 hPa] over the Tasman Sea will move east of New Zealand
later today, weakening the ridge over much of Queensland. An upper trough over
southwestern Australia will gradually move east, with an associated cold front
entering the far west of the state later today. A second high will move into the
Great Australian Bight on Sunday.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Isolated showers about the east coast and developing over the adjacent inland
areas during the day. Showers tending scattered about the North Tropical Coast,
Fraser Island and the Sunshine Coast. Morning drizzle areas about the tropical
interior. High cloud increasing over the south with patchy light rain areas
developing over the southwest. Fine and mostly sunny over the remainder.
Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds, tending NE to NW over the west ahead of a
fresh and gusty S to SE change extending over the southwest during the afternoon
and evening.
Forecast for Sunday
The high in the Great Australian Bight will move slowly east, pushing a ridge
through western Queensland. The upper trough and surface front will move
eastwards across southern Queensland, bringing with them thickening cloud. Rain
areas expected over the southern inland, shifting to the southeast interior
during the afternoon and reaching the southeast coast in the evening. Rain areas
will tend patchy over northern parts of the southern interior. Isolated showers
about parts of the east coast, mainly in the tropics. Fine and mostly sunny
elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
The high in the Great Australian Bight will move further east towards South
Australia, strengthening the ridge through Queensland. The upper trough and
front will continue moving eastwards over the Coral Sea with rain areas over the
southeast clearing early morning. A surface low pressure system off the northern
New South Wales coast is expected to move towards the east-northeast,
strengthening the winds over southeast coastal waters and bringing isolated
showers to the coastal fringe of southeast Queensland. Rough surf conditions are
expected to develop about beaches south of Sandy Cape [Fraser Island]. Isolated
showers about the far northern coast. Strong winds are also likely over the
southern Gulf during the morning. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high will drift east to be over southeastern Australia, maintaining a
strong ridge over Queensland and developing strong winds along the Queensland
coast. The surface low will move further out into the northern Tasman Sea, but
will maintain strong winds over southeast coastal waters during the morning,
with rough surf conditions continuing throughout the day. Strong winds are
possible over the southern Gulf during the morning. Winds will tend more onshore
along the Queensland east coast bringing isolated showers to coastal areas.
Showers may tend scattered about the North Tropical Coast. A cool to cold day
with moderate to fresh S to SE winds. Early frost areas over the southern
inland.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The high over southeastern Australia will move slowly east into the Tasman
Sea while weakening. Much of the interior of the state will remain fine under
the influence of the ridge. Isolated showers are expected along the east coast
and adjacent inland, likely tending scattered about the North Tropical Coast.
High cloud increasing again through the southwest and southern parts of the
state as another upper trough develops over Western Australia, however little if
any rain is expected.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Saturday.
