MELBOURNE - May 31/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait and Cooktown. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A large high [1033 hPa] over the Tasman Sea will move east of New Zealand later today, weakening the ridge over much of Queensland. An upper trough over southwestern Australia will gradually move east, with an associated cold front entering the far west of the state later today. A second high will move into the Great Australian Bight on Sunday. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Isolated showers about the east coast and developing over the adjacent inland areas during the day. Showers tending scattered about the North Tropical Coast, Fraser Island and the Sunshine Coast. Morning drizzle areas about the tropical interior. High cloud increasing over the south with patchy light rain areas developing over the southwest. Fine and mostly sunny over the remainder. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds, tending NE to NW over the west ahead of a fresh and gusty S to SE change extending over the southwest during the afternoon and evening. Forecast for Sunday The high in the Great Australian Bight will move slowly east, pushing a ridge through western Queensland. The upper trough and surface front will move eastwards across southern Queensland, bringing with them thickening cloud. Rain areas expected over the southern inland, shifting to the southeast interior during the afternoon and reaching the southeast coast in the evening. Rain areas will tend patchy over northern parts of the southern interior. Isolated showers about parts of the east coast, mainly in the tropics. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Forecast for Monday The high in the Great Australian Bight will move further east towards South Australia, strengthening the ridge through Queensland. The upper trough and front will continue moving eastwards over the Coral Sea with rain areas over the southeast clearing early morning. A surface low pressure system off the northern New South Wales coast is expected to move towards the east-northeast, strengthening the winds over southeast coastal waters and bringing isolated showers to the coastal fringe of southeast Queensland. Rough surf conditions are expected to develop about beaches south of Sandy Cape [Fraser Island]. Isolated showers about the far northern coast. Strong winds are also likely over the southern Gulf during the morning. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Forecast for Tuesday The high will drift east to be over southeastern Australia, maintaining a strong ridge over Queensland and developing strong winds along the Queensland coast. The surface low will move further out into the northern Tasman Sea, but will maintain strong winds over southeast coastal waters during the morning, with rough surf conditions continuing throughout the day. Strong winds are possible over the southern Gulf during the morning. Winds will tend more onshore along the Queensland east coast bringing isolated showers to coastal areas. Showers may tend scattered about the North Tropical Coast. A cool to cold day with moderate to fresh S to SE winds. Early frost areas over the southern inland. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The high over southeastern Australia will move slowly east into the Tasman Sea while weakening. Much of the interior of the state will remain fine under the influence of the ridge. Isolated showers are expected along the east coast and adjacent inland, likely tending scattered about the North Tropical Coast. High cloud increasing again through the southwest and southern parts of the state as another upper trough develops over Western Australia, however little if any rain is expected. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Saturday.
